Well, I'd buy them because they make more sense. I remember watching The Two Towers on opening night in the cinema, and I remember how I felt when Frodo suddenly called Gollum "Smeagol" and told Gollum how he heard his life was a sad story, and it was like a record skipping -- I was thinking, woah, when did that happen?

I'm not crazy about all of the uncut scenes, but the extended cuts are what was written and shot, before Jackson had to trim them down as he was under contract to deliver the films under a certain time limit (which was relaxed for Return of the King, after the films had become a phenomenon).

So sure - rent both and make your own decision. Just saying, like Viggo, I don't consider the theatricals to be the "true" versions of the films, and ever since I owned the extended editions, I haven't watched the theatrical cuts...so I'm coming up on close to a decade of the theatrical cuts gathering dust.

ahh so many decisions!! after doing a little research you guys are all right the majority of the people out there prefer the EE version, the only negative they have is sitting through it in one sitting.. it seems that's the hardest part because of them all be 3 and half hours long, but i do like movies with stories and character build. Screw it ill buy the EE version! Thanks again everybody!

Normally I watch one EE disc per day. It takes twice as long to watch the movie, but enhances the experience and lessens the fatigue.

I'm not sure if I wrote this already in the 675 pages of this thread, but my only real issue with any of the EE's was
[Show spoiler]Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimlin coming out of the mountain and seeing the Corsair ships in ROTK. It ruins the big reveal of him jumping out of the boat and saving the day.

THIS. I'll add that everything involving Boromir/Faramir/Denethor becomes better / more meaningful with the added scenes.

Good choice. But you don't need to watch them all in one sitting though - since each movie is split across two discs, there are natural "built in" break points.

Similarly, at Rivendell, many people have a problem with the reddish hue infused into that location. I thought that was the whole idea in the first place, since Jackson is trying to reinforce the concept that this is the Elves autumn of their sojourn in Middle-earth, and will soon be leaving to return to Elvenhome. Again, the EE neutralizes that idea, not to mention that the darkening makes the film less interesting in general, despite the improvement in detail. But as stated previously, this is just an opinion. Most people would probably gladly trade the darkening for detail, and that's OK. It's just not my cup of tea.
Right as usual GB. I think the shot that I notice the darker picture the most is where they show all of the yellow flowers in Hobbiton near the beginning. It looks more overcast than it used to.

Thanks GB. Yes, I love my HT room. With my 130" pj screen and 7.2 audio setup, it's like being in a real theater, but without all of the annoying side-effects. I'm sure your Sharp has an absolutely amazing picture too.

Also, I'd like to say that with all of the talk about the picture quality in here, something that isn't mentioned very often that I think we can all agree on is that the audio on all three films is fantastic.

I hope you get as much enjoyment out of them as I have. LotR, particularly the EE, are some of my favorite films.

It only exists in screenshots posted on internet forums. If you don't notice it, don't look for it. IMO, all three of the transfers are excellent.

I DOUBLY disagree!

If I sit down to watch LOTR EE, it's all or nothing! That's right. I've now come to the point where I will start FOTR and not leave from in front of my TV until I've finished ROTK.

Welcome to the club!

Don't be surprised though if there are a bunch of people who come into this thread now and quote you while spouting stuff like "You are wrong. To deny the existence of the green tint is blatant ignorance. Get your eyes checked or fix your TV calibration. It is an indisputable fact that it is there and as plain to see as anything."

Just ignore them and don't try fighting back. It only makes this thread worse... over and over again.

I like stretching out the experience - no hurry - like savoring a fine wine. Similarly, when I read the books, I try to make it last most of the summer, starting on Memorial Day weekend and finishing sometime in August.

ha i was stating what some reviewers were saying on the tube.. I'm an hour into the second disc and I haven't been bored once.. As for the Green Tint discussion.. There is really no discussion; its just not there at all.. i mean yea when they show the bushes and grass i see green, but aren't they suppose to be green? I wont be arguing because no argument should exist!

It's really only noticeable (to me) during the first half of the movie. The Shire and Rivendell just don't seem as bright and sunny as they did on the DVD.

I've held on to my theatrical cuts for the sole purpose of watching it with friends and them not wanting to watch the longer versions.

The BB price is probably the best you'll get until a Black Friday level sale.
