So basically 60 bucks for all 3 individual sets. Not a bad price. I'll definitely jump on this.
Actually that's $62 plus applicable sales tax. As the poster above pointed out, the EE box set has been as low as $40 on some sites. Then there was the time where Wal-Mart had excess stock and sold the EE set for $24.96 on their website until they sold out in about 2 days.

This time last year, I pretty much played the waiting game because I knew the price would drop. Last year for both Black Friday and Christmas it was selling at $40. A month or two ago the set was $50. It's definitely your choice, but I think if you're patient you'll eventually get a better deal.

It seems like right now is not a good time to buy as it's up again. The price of this movie is liking buying stocks, sometimes up, sometimes down and not very consistent.
I want the individual boxsets. I could've bought the EE box at wall Mart a few weeks ago for 44

So you're willing to pay an extra $18+ for exactly the same content?

They all come individually packaged in that box, too. You could literally just throw away the box and arrive at almost the exact same thing.

I like the artwork for the individual sets better.

I'm not really one to buy complete boxsets unless it's a tv show.

You are aware, to the right buyer on here, he could sell the UV codes from the individual ExE releases and net between $15-20? Basically recovering his "losses". I paid someone $12 just for Towers and RoTK

$15-20 for three ~360 Digital Copies? Never even seen someone crazy to do that much less heard of it.

If you know where to go, you can get around $7 for a single digital copy if it comes from a Blu-ray.

I do it every week. Ultraviolet is the best thing that ever happened to me, because everything is a lot cheaper now, ha

Exactly. I'm one of those people willing to purchase the ExE UV's for $5 each.

I watched the first disc of my Target Exclusive Extended Edition Blu-ray of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring last night. I watched my old DVDs countless times when they were released, then grew weary of the movies and put them away. As such, it's been about nine years since I last saw any of these films. I'm still suffering from "Middle Earth hangover" even after all this time, hence my muted reaction to first film in The Hobbit trilogy, but I am still excited about revisiting The Lord of the Rings films via my new Blu-rays over the next few days.

Here are a few initial impressions of the Blu-ray and of my return to the film after nine years or so...
  • The computer effects look dated. The cinematography of this movie looks dated. The overall vibe of this movie looks dated. Don't get me wrong, because I still find this to be a top-notch adventure film and an amazing adaptation of the Tolkien literature, but this movie just seems to cry out that it is over a decade old.
  • The Blu-ray transfer is awesome to my eyes, and the movie has never looked better as far as picture quality. It's really quite stunning. I read a lot of online debates about green tints and such, but I do not notice anything at all astray about this disc, and everything looks just right. The Blu-ray is everything that I hoped it would be as far as audio and video presentation, and this impression hits home even though I've only watched the first half of the first film in the format.
  • Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and it's fun to revisit these characters. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring has always had a welcoming "lived in" feel to it that I love, and this high definition presentation makes that even better. I'm going to enjoy going through these three films.
  • Unfortunately, it's rather difficult to watch this movie with a straight face now, because Facebook memes have pretty much ruined the effect.
    "One does not simply..." Argh.

What'd you expect? I think the effects look fine. I in fact didn't like the sleek look of the effects in Hobbit. Azog looked kinda fake.

I'm not sure what that even means, but guess what: it *is* over a decade old! I don't know how cinematography can look dated, per se — you mean it's not full of flash-cuts and strobe effects to make it look "dynamic"? In the case of LotR, I've always thought it looked completely appropriate to the big-canvas tone of the story.

I've got to the point where, anytime someone says something like "everything looks just right", especially as an oblique slap to complaints about The Teal, I have to believe they're simply not very observant, visually or colour-wise. Enough reviewers have commented on it to establish it as fact, and even WB implicitly acknowledged the transfer looks strange, but made a weak implication that it was somehow intended. It's beyond question that the transfer of Fellowship is not "just right"; the only questions remaining are whether people are astute enough to notice it, or whether they care that it looks the way it does.

Couldn't agree more, especially with The Two Towers and Return of the King. I have absolutely no problem with Fellowship of the Ring (minus a few scenes) but Two Towers and King really showed off the "dated"ness with Gollum and other animated feats used. I find that sort of sad seeing how I loved the first in that aspect. Still love the movies though.

I know that a lot of fans have their butts in a blender about the green tint on The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition Blu-ray, and it's certainly apparent during certain scenes when I took the time to notice, but it's nothing that stands out adversely to my eyes and, indeed, everything does look just right to me. My ambivalence about the color scheme may simply be due to the fact that this was my first time revisiting the film in almost a decade, but the green tint on the transfer did not hamper my enjoyment of this film in the slightest. I think that this Blu-ray transfer looks marvelous.

Last night, I watched the second disc of The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition, and then watched the first half hour of The Two Towers (These Extended Editions take time to watch!). My previous comments about the dated look of the film still stand, but I now have a more favorable outlook. The Mines of Moria scenes are still mind-blowingly good. The Gollum effects in The Two Towers look wonderful on Blu-ray so far into my viewing. This CGI Gollum was the wild card of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, and it still impresses me that the filmmakers pulled it off so effectively.

The simple truth is that all movies that utilize a lot of computer-generated effects are going to look dated after a few years. This is why the original Star Wars trilogy still has a timeless look to it, while The Lord of the Rings scenes call attention to their years of release. The opening sequences of The Fellowship of the Ring, with the initial defeat of Sauron on the battlefield, were the scenes that necessitated my previous post about the dated look of the film.

It's $55 on WBShop.

Not sure if it's a good price, but it seems to be the cheapest.

I bought the stand-alone Target-exclusive Extended Editions for $10 apiece last month. These are the bare-bones releases that only include the movies themselves on two discs in each package, but it's all that I need. I went through most of the special feature stuff with my old Extended Edition DVD set, and feel no inclination to watch those again.

I'm not sure if the Target exclusives are still around for the low price. If they are, then it's a good option for those who simply want the Extended Edition movies with the respective commentaries.

Actually, it's still just your opinion that there is anything problematic about this disc.
Controversial does not equal problematic. "Different than the DVD" does not equal problematic.

OK. I was wondering why you did not mention anything about the contrast.

Besides the green tint issue, this new one also has contrast(black crush) problems too. IMO this issue stands out MORE as a sore thumb then the green tint.
