Actually that's $62 plus applicable sales tax. As the poster above pointed out, the EE box set has been as low as $40 on some sites. Then there was the time where Wal-Mart had excess stock and sold the EE set for $24.96 on their website until they sold out in about 2 days.

This time last year, I pretty much played the waiting game because I knew the price would drop. Last year for both Black Friday and Christmas it was selling at $40. A month or two ago the set was $50. It's definitely your choice, but I think if you're patient you'll eventually get a better deal.

Exactly. I'm one of those people willing to purchase the ExE UV's for $5 each.

I watched the first disc of my Target Exclusive Extended Edition Blu-ray of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring last night. I watched my old DVDs countless times when they were released, then grew weary of the movies and put them away. As such, it's been about nine years since I last saw any of these films. I'm still suffering from "Middle Earth hangover" even after all this time, hence my muted reaction to first film in The Hobbit trilogy, but I am still excited about revisiting The Lord of the Rings films via my new Blu-rays over the next few days.
Here are a few initial impressions of the Blu-ray and of my return to the film after nine years or so...

Couldn't agree more, especially with The Two Towers and Return of the King. I have absolutely no problem with Fellowship of the Ring (minus a few scenes) but Two Towers and King really showed off the "dated"ness with Gollum and other animated feats used. I find that sort of sad seeing how I loved the first in that aspect. Still love the movies though. |

Last night, I watched the second disc of The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition, and then watched the first half hour of The Two Towers (These Extended Editions take time to watch!). My previous comments about the dated look of the film still stand, but I now have a more favorable outlook. The Mines of Moria scenes are still mind-blowingly good. The Gollum effects in The Two Towers look wonderful on Blu-ray so far into my viewing. This CGI Gollum was the wild card of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, and it still impresses me that the filmmakers pulled it off so effectively. The simple truth is that all movies that utilize a lot of computer-generated effects are going to look dated after a few years. This is why the original Star Wars trilogy still has a timeless look to it, while The Lord of the Rings scenes call attention to their years of release. The opening sequences of The Fellowship of the Ring, with the initial defeat of Sauron on the battlefield, were the scenes that necessitated my previous post about the dated look of the film. I bought the stand-alone Target-exclusive Extended Editions for $10 apiece last month. These are the bare-bones releases that only include the movies themselves on two discs in each package, but it's all that I need. I went through most of the special feature stuff with my old Extended Edition DVD set, and feel no inclination to watch those again.
I'm not sure if the Target exclusives are still around for the low price. If they are, then it's a good option for those who simply want the Extended Edition movies with the respective commentaries. |

OK. I was wondering why you did not mention anything about the contrast. Besides the green tint issue, this new one also has contrast(black crush) problems too. IMO this issue stands out MORE as a sore thumb then the green tint. .
