I don't think either was ever scripted.

I've read comments from Jackson that Tom Bombadil was a whole different tone from the story he was making and (he felt) wouldn't work on-screen, and that the Scouring was unnecessary to complete the story.

I can see his point on Tom Bombadil, even though I enjoy that section of the book for its echoes of the "Green Man" archetype, but I still kinda miss the Scouring, as this was the Hobbits' coming of age and the culmination of their hero story. But Jackson is probably right there as well, in terms of telling a screen story.

Absolutely. Those are both great parts of the book (especially Scouring) but I really don't think they would've translated well to film. Definitely Tom Bombadil anyway. The Scouring would've been awesome, but Return of the King was already so long as it is that I think it would've dragged the movie on even more.

I didn't think the film dragged at all. I loved every second of it.

I didn't think the film dragged at all (even the extended editions) either. I think they did a great job with the ending. I can't recall any other film that had "multiple endings" and still pulled it off this well. What I mean by multiple endings is that there are many scenes that would qualify as a single ending in most films. Victory at Minis Tirith, Battle at the gates of Mordor, destruction of the ring, crowning of Aragon, Hobbits return to the Shire, the final sailing away, etc.... I think your average movie would have ended with any of these, yet LOTR incorporates all these emotional climaxes very well.

Not crazy about how they handled the Grey Havens. People weep when they read the scene in the book, even get choked up watching the Rankin/Bass version of the scene. There are numerous distractions in the Jackson version -- Bilbo looks like a mummy, Jackson's use of slow motion doesn't work they way I think it was intended, and the "Wizard of Oz" goodbye with Merry, Pippin, and Sam feels mawkish. It's the problem with adaptations, one this film is not immune to...sometimes writers don't know when to get out of the way, and stop relying on other movie templates, and instead, let the material speak for itself. By the time we get to Frodo and Sam's farewell, you have expect Frodo to say, "And you, Scarecrow, I'll miss you most of all."

If you just want the individual extended versions, BN.com has Two Towers and Return of the King for $17.49 each.

Yes! I was at a local BN last night and I really wanted Fellowship for Two Towers, Return of the King prices but the sale is only for those two! Bummer.

Good deal though, considering it's Buy Two Get the Third Free right now

Hi Mr Phelps,
The Blu-rays for the movies themselves are region-free. In editions that have the bonus discs on DVD, then those DVDs are all region-coded.

That's true all over the world.

The database entry has your answer:

Well worth checking the entries for your answers as often the hard work done by the folks maintaining the database will give you the answer you need.

I can't, mate. I have the US boxed set of the three extended films (which has English SDH, Spanish and Portuguese), and it's my understanding the individual releases are the identical discs, but I don't want to assume and steer you wrong.

I see why you're asking. Hopefully someone who has the individual releases can clarify?

They are identical discs and content so same coding regardless of the release you buy whether that be the original box set release with digital copies, the re-release sans digital copies or the individual releases. No chopping and changing between the releases to complicate matters.

They may be region coded. My set on the back says "this should only be sold in the US." However, the blu-ray versions will play on both US and European players regardless as it is the same "blu-ray region code". This is unlike the DVD format which has the US and Europe as a different region code. The wikipedia link below explains Blu-ray region locking:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Region_codes

You should also note that Extra content included on DVD discs would be region coded to either Europe or the US.

invenio, the map you link to shows that the US and Europe are very specifically different regions. Sorry, but you're only muddying the waters here with wrong information.

Yes, Blu-rays and DVDs use different coding systems, but in both Europe and the US have different codes. In Blu-ray the Americas are region A, and Europe is region B; in DVD, North America is region 1, most of South America is region 4 and Europe is region 2.

Woops... Your correct. I made a mistake. When they changed the region coding from DVD to Blu-ray and then decided to have most blu-rays completely region free anyway, it became real confusing. Sorry for the confusion.

At least they simplified the coding schema for Blu. It could've been worse.

It was even simpler for HD-DVD... None at all! Maybe that's why some studios didn't support it.
