I noticed the movies come in two discs each. Does that mean when you are watching disc one the movie stops halfway and you must insert disc two to finish the rest of the film?

Yes. But those breaks are very well placed in the narrative development.

The films are too long to fit on one disc, so it was split into two. But, like Petra said, the discs stop at good halfway points in the story.

Yes, the extended edition Blu-rays are two discs per movie as stated by others. If the break really bothers you, you can opt for the theatrical edition blu-rays which are single discs (but obviously the films are shorter in this edition).

Technically, that is an incorrect statement. The films very well COULD fit onto a single disc each. However, in order to do that much would have to be sacrificed. First to go would be the amazing commentary tracks included. Then, the audio tracks would likely get compressed all to hell. And finally, the video would get compressed to a degree that would allow it to all fit on a single disc.

Long story short... it could be done but the films would look and sound like shit!

The extended editions are awesome . Right now I gave my set to my sister to borrow. She's also a LOTR fan and she's never seen the extended editions before.

Your sister's name wouldn't happen to be Rachel... would it?

No, it's not. Why? If you're referring to my username, Rachel is my name.

LOTR extended trilogy is definitely my favorite set of blurays I own. I literally marathon the entire trilogy once every couple months. I never gave LOTR a chance until about 9 months ago when I borrowed it from a friend. I was never into fantasy or middle earthly type of stuff. Afterwards I immediately bought it and can't stop watching it still. Anyone have any movie suggestions that are similar to LOTR? Obviously nothing can be as good.

The Hobbit (not as good), Game of Thrones, Gladiator, Braveheart (These 2 are more historic than fantasy-ish), it's hard thinking of others similar to LOTR, definitely in a category of its own.

Yea, I've seen all of those. I like Braveheart and I'm excited for the other Hobbit movies. I thought Solomon Kane might of been cool but when I saw it my wife and I could not stop laughing due to how horrible it was. I hated it, maybe I just have too high of expectations.

There's a ton of sword and sorcery movies from the late 70's and 80's. If you've never seen it, Beastmaster is a great way to get started.
