I was 19 when FOTR was released and working at Blockbuster at the time. It was a milestone in 2001 because it was the first DVD we had carried at the store where we got more than 100 copies.

Nearly...
I turn 21 this October. ![]() I have to say that this website has been extremely useful in the last few years for my film studies/film making classes I'm taking at uni. I've learnt a hell of a lot on here. ![]() Last edited by The Fallen Deity; 07-08-2014 at 12:25 PM. |

Always very lucky to have youth and health, but I don't think I would've liked growing up in this overly-connected age. First of all as a child I was often sent to the backyard to play, and that I did. Every stick was a sword or gun, every tree a dragon or bad guy. I needed an imagination so I have one. Even the old Atari 2600 slightly drowned that out when I got it around 10 years old. I can't imagine trying to be creative when you have a smart phone at age 5 or whatever.
Then comes the fun times of teenage to mid-20's. Surveillance cameras were just starting to become common when I was of that age (I'm 43 now), but there was still more places that did not have cameras. You can't get away with any youthful stupidness anymore. If your friends (or enemies around) aren't recording it with their phones, surely there's a store security or street camera catching it. ![]() The bright side is it's much easier to get ahold of any friends and if you're into other peoples business, probably the golden age for that. I would guess it's easier to get drugs also. Does anyone underage stand in front the liquor store and try to get people to buy you beer or booze anymore? "Pimping a buyer" was a rite of passage in my time. Porn is also getting boring with unlimited access to it. There was something charming about renting those big-box VHS tapes from the back of the shady feeling local rental place, and sometimes the movies were decent enough to have your friend bring over their VCR so you could both dub it. Now it's instant anything porn. It was funner in the shadows when you had to go out and hunt down a movie. ![]() |

I only ever saw one of these movies in theaters because I was still pretty young at the time and didn't go see a lot of movies in general. I talked my family into going to see Return of the King at the drive-in theater when I was 10..they had absolutely no idea how long it was, my dad was packing up and getting ready to leave after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields because he thought it was about over

Yeah, hard to argue with that. Pretty much was just watching them on TV for old time's sake. I don't think I've watched the Theatrical Edition all the way through in at least 8 years..I bought the steelbooks during the TCM sale a couple weeks ago so I might try watching them soon. I'm going to see Return of the King in Concert in Chicago, IL here in early August where the Chicago Symphony Orchestra plays the music alongside the Theatrical Edition of ROTK playing on a projector screen, so I'll need to watch it again first just to remember what parts are left out from that edition.

I remember the 2001 premiere of FOTR, which was organized by the German Tolkien Society. The theatre it took place in has been shut down since. However, I still remember the feeling of hearing Galadriel's voice in the total darkness in the opening intro.

That doesn't mean all film professors are dipshits. I am 32 now and took a film class at my dear old Alma Mater (Wabash College in Indiana if anyone gives 2 sharts) and my film professor (who was actually a theater professor of all things) HATED, I MEAN DESPISED DNR. And this was BEFORE blu ray... dude was awesome, spotted it and pointed out excessive uses back in the DVD days... Dude was a machine.
Edit... if you have an account and are reading this Dr. Abbott, thanks for all your film knowledge ![]() Last edited by threefiftyrocket; 07-09-2014 at 01:42 AM. |
