Ran to BestBuy and got them to price match. Coupled with my $5 certificate, it came out to $35 with tax.

The downside to buying the US release of the Extended set is that the DVDs aren't region-free, so that's something to be mindful of if you're in Region 2 and don't have a way to play Region 1 DVDs.

...and at $38 it's well over the customs limit so it may well attract a sizeable fee at this end, that's if the amazon basket doesn't add on an 'import fees deposit' to begin with. Either way, it could still end up costing grim well over the $38 + shipping, whereas the UK edition with identical content can be had 'as new' for about £20 or new for about £27.

Just bought this, had a $25 gift card so it was $12.99. So finally have it on Blu Ray.

I finally got my replacement for the 5th disc of Fellowship today from wbshop.com. They were quick and easy to deal with. I still watch Fellowship on DVD because I don't like the color timing change for the BD. The shire looks wonky and I don't like the snow either.

Then watch the theatrical BD. Anything is better than the DVD.

But I don't like the theatrical cuts. Plus I have the TV in my bedroom and it is only 37 inches so upscaled the DVD isn't that bad. I usually don't mind when films have the color timing changed (most of the time I wouldn't ever know unless it is pointed out) but with Fellowship it bothers me.

BIB: No, It's OK, dont worry about it. I had read some of it but wasnt 100% sure
Is the UK edition identical, content and packaging wise to the US edition? (I can play R1 DVDs on my player BTW). I remember back in the DVD days, the US packaging was vastly superior to the cheapo UK packaging for these EE sets)

For a second there I thought this was a DVD site.

All jokes aside, I haven't personally tested it myself but I've heard some folks over at the databass forums say that the DVD 6.1 mix actually has more bass extension than the Blu-ray. I don't have a high-end sub by any means so I can't test it but they have a bunch of graphs and tables showing the frequency of the movies on their forums. Obviously theoretical measurement don't always translate to actual performance but still something worth looking into.

Good point I didnt know how much that was in comparison, or if it was identical content/packaging wise (I'm being picky here, but for the DVD EEs, the US editions had lovely sturdy cardboard packaging and the UK ones looked much cheaper).

But you don't want to. You stated you do not like the theatrical version now that you've seen the extended edition. You only want to watch the extended edition. Hilarious. Made my day. Thanks.

[Show spoiler]The original version of Star Wars is available to watch on DVD, just like you're watching your preferred version of Fellowship on the same format.

You are correct, the EE's from New Line were much better than the EE's from EiV, what with the latter's missing easter eggs, horrible player generated subtitles and the pitch corrected audio, not to mention the far superior feel to the packaging. (I kinda miss those ones, I might rebuy 'em just for the hell of it.)

But for the Blu-rays the AV quality is the same in every way and the box has a nice sturdy feel. The only real difference is the amarays for each movie, the US version has slim black cases whereas the UK version has fatter blue cases, which are the same size as what the Hobbit UK 3D versions come in.

We got similar sets in R4 - pitch corrected audio included. On the other hand, we PAL-ites had better resolution than the image on R1. And yeah, we had horrid player-generated subs as well, not the Tolkien-looking ones the R1 set had.

Which prompts me to ask: why weren't these carried across to the BDs? Anyone know? The BD subs are certainly better than the player-generated ones for the DVD, but they have a whole different design sense from the rest of the package, including the credit text. Since the BD subs are overlaid graphics, they can pretty much use any font they want, can't they? Was there an actual reason for them to go with a modern-looking serif font on the BDs?

Thanks! Even with the fatter cases, do you reckon this would save space over the DVD editions?
The UK set is the same as the US one right?

It'd save space but only an inch or two. UK set has the same content as the US version = 15 discs of goodness, which includes the excellent 'fly on the wall' Costa Botes documentaries that were previously exclusive to the limited edition standalone theatrical/EE DVDs.
