Fantastic! It's great seeing the honest-to-goodness preorder up.

Now bring on the fancy pants exclusive editions.

Is anyone else concerned that the original extended DVDs had discrete 6.1 audio, but Amazon lists these extended editions on Blu-ray as having DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. I mean sure I should thankful enough that it is now lossless, but if the DVD could have 6.1 why couldn't the Blus have at least that if not 7.1. I mean that was another of the selling points with the original extended DVDs. They were longer and had better sound.

Call me crazy, but I have no interest in this when they are releasing all the special features on dvd. Especially when most if not all of those features are out on dvd already. If they are only repackaginng the special features on dvd why not leave them out? I would much rather just have the movies only and at a cheaper price.

If Amazon's description of the special features being on "9 DVD's with 26 hours of special features", then I think we can assume that the Appendices will be spread over six discs as they are right now in the DVD set and the Costa Botes documentaries that came with the "Limited Editions" of the trilogy will be spread over three discs...which gives us the 9.

The question then becomes how many discs for the the films themselves. Because if each film comes on one Blu Ray disc, that's makes it a twelve disc set...just like the DVD set.

Honestly, not going to complain. I thought the extended edition DVD set was overkill to begin with. But, that doesn't mean I don't want it all. I'll eventually get around to watching the documentaries again....

One thing I do know is that if this does get released this year, this will be the last time I buy the Rings Trilogy. The only, only way I might rebuy them on Blu Ray is if Peter Jackson sits down and does real director's cut for the films. That's the only I'll consider it. New special features won't get it done for me and neither will packaging the films with the new Hobbits film get it done either.

I want real director's cuts that's a mix between the theatrical cuts and the extended cuts. A happy medium if you will.

Bill Hunt reported back in January that they were on two BDs each.

Bill Hunt released the info in his column today

The good: Expect the extended-edition version of all three LOTR films in 2011. Warner will attempt to do these in (obviously) extremely high quality transfers that will fix minor items here and there and still likely put one movie on two discs rather than cram data to one disc and let quality suffer.

The bad: The wait for the EEs will be over but the wait for the Ultimate Box Set has probably been pushed back until post-”Hobbit” movies. The version of the films due this year will probably contain very little or no new additional content on the extras. When Peter Jackson officially took over as director of the pair of new films, any chance of him working on the ultimate edition of the film with new extras probably was postponed. It is clear from comments from actors and Jackson that there are more extras, waiting in the wings for the eventual, hi-def edition of these films and the special release has been planned from the beginning.

Additional comments: With the home video market suffering as it is, making an exact duplication transfer is much less expensive than adding additional value which studios no longer see as a good financial proposition.

Additional extras still seem to be a possibility but if there are any, they would likely be minor and a far cry from the full-blown material that was held in reserve. For consumers, this means not only the prospect of buying these films again on Blu-ray now but then buying them again in a few years with the rich historic and definitive extras. Still, the prospect of never getting the fabled “Ultimate Box Set” seems even worse.

Again, the key here is PQ, PQ, PQ! if it's not right, no amount of extras would make this a worthwhile buy.

It's about time this set is being released. Let's hope the transfers, namely Fellowship, are done correctly.

I'll probably get the EE release this year.. not that big of a LOTR fan to care about any extras... I never really went through all the Harry Potter extras anyway...

Put my preorder in. Didn't buy the theatricals as I'm only interested in the extended cuts, and I gave my extended version DVDs away a few months ago in anticipation of this release.

While the Fellowship EE didn't add a whole lot, the Two Towers and RotK EE's are 4 and 4.5 hours long, respectively, IIRC. They'd be crazy to cram all that onto a single disc, plus multiple audio commentaries and such.

I'm not a huge videophile. Every Blu Ray I've watched has looked better than the DVD, and that's good enough for me. So I'm sure I'll be fine with the transfer quality.

Audio I've never cared much about and still use a 10 year or so old 5.1 home theater in a box Sony setup.

The limited edition EE's announced on this site's front page, are they going to have super cool packaging like the limited edition EE DVDs? Not the original set that were like $100 each but the ones that came out in about 2006. They were just the movies, extended editions, of course. Not a whole lot or any maybe special features. I hope so. Those were cool.

Here's a link for those who don't know what I'm talking about:
