A little off topic, but for those that might be interested Bottleneck Gallery has a pretty neat set of prints, for all 3 films, by Matt Ferguson. I've ordered form the place before and they are fantastic. If you're interested, order quick, because their items are always super limited.

I have finally watched these in their entirety.
Fellowship is really good, and easily the best IMO. The 2nd one has Helm's Deep, which is pretty cool, but not much else going for it. The 3rd one has lots of epic battles, but also decent drama. The VFX are really spotty at times. I can see all the CG people on the bigatures, as they stick out like a sore thumb. The "massive" scenes look pretty awful too. At times the bluescreen elements were pulled in a very sloppy manner, especially with the actors' hair. Gollum looks so cartoony, and often just pasted into the scenes. The compositing leaves a lot to be desired sometimes. I could go on and on. Overall, it's quite alright, and nothing that completely ruined it for me, but believable is something else. There are many nice shots too though, so it's not all bad. Lol It is totally unbelievable in terms of physics however, something that was further exaggerated in the Hobbit movies, where it was done to the extreme and unwatchable. The packaging is really neat and classy. I guess I like them enough to keep them, at least for a while. I don't know how many times I'll sit down to watch them. Fellowship looks much better than the theatrical version, which I rented from the library once. The sound is the best in all the films. Excellent surround activity and great LFE. It couldn't wish for more. Stellar sound across the board. PQ: 4-4,5/5 for all three. Some filtering.... Pretty decent overall. |

I think the Gollum CG largely still holds up actually. There might be a few parts questionable. I do agree with some who say some of the CG in Return of the King is questionable, but it's also 11 years old now.
I really didn't see much filtering as the grain structures are pretty strong. A little bit of EE in 'King makes it look a tad more digital compared to the first two which look very film-like. |

I never A'B'd the theatricals and extended side by side, but the screencaps do look a bit better on the extended. The color seems better and compression a bit better as to be expected. I also think the extended Fellowship of the Ring (new/different transfer) blows away the theatrical version in every category including and especially color - even if there are hints of teal in some scenes, but not everyone feels the same. I hardly even noticed the teal even while looking for it.

How is that confirmation that 3D Lord of the Rings releases will never happen? I kind of doubt those release dates of re-releases are accurate... but I also think it will happen eventually. Jackson didn't say he didn't want them in 3D, he said they talked about it "vaguely" with the studio. He wants it to happen but it's a time consuming and expensive project to do right. Elijah Wood talked about it before too when the question was raised and said that it wasn't planned yet for that reason. If each film takes around a year or so to convert, that's a lot of work. And Jackson would probably want to at least supervise the progress being made to make sure it's on track properly. I seriously doubt he wanted to do that while making the Hobbit films. Now that they are done, though... he might be more open to it.
Jackson saying he talked about it with the studio suggests he wants them to convert them but it's ultimately up to them whether or not to back 3D conversions for the trilogy... and that will be a huge undertaking to be on the level of conversions like Jurassic Park. And if they are going to be converted into 3D, Jackson will undoubtedly want them to work hard on them so they are quality 3D presentations and not rushed 3D conversions that are pointless and are more gimmicky than successful at enhancing the experience. |
