As long as the box set is in print I'm not sure why it would matter.

Because I prefer standalone releases to box sets.

They do appear to be OOP on Warner's press site. No word of any re-release, but I'd assume they might put something new out when they decide to make releases with the Hobbit movies and LOTR movies

They are available individually in Canada, but just the movie discs, and there appears to be French on the packaging

I'm not a big slipcover collector, but I'm glad I bought the slips for the individual extended edition releases last years. The artwork on them is really awesome.

Peter Jackson Suggests Even Longer Cuts Of 'The Lord Of The Rings' Could Be Released. Peter Jackson casually revealed that even more material from 'LOTR' is sitting in a vault somewhere in Arizona, and "if there's enough interest out there..." it could see the light of day. Sheesh. what else can they add apart from the deleted scene's ?

That article appears to be a year old, but I guess we weren't going to see new versions anyway until the "Whole Middle Earth" box surfaces once the Hobbit III EE comes out.

If anything further to be added was from Tolkien (barrow-wights or Shire-scourging, for instance), then yeah, I'd probably consider it. But if it's more "let's make it a multiplex popcorn actioner" interpolations, then no thanks.

But to be honest, the Hobbit films have made me question Jackson's judgement of late. I mean, I liked The Frighteners, mostly loved the LotR flicks, and actually really like his King Kong, but so much of his Hobbit ... sorry, but it's pretty stinky.

Where's his finesse gone? If he starts expanding LotR even more with scenes he's previously blue-pencilled, then is that really going to be a positive move? Jackson really seems to be pimping out his film-making cred.

I would like to see Arwen leading the Elven reinforcements to Helm's Deep plus Éowyn and Faramir's wedding

I think we'd mostly see small changes/additions if these special extended-extended editions happened. Stuff like Martin Freeman replacing Ian Holm in the FotR prologue, FotR Gollum being updated to look more like his AUJ/TTT/RotK self, etc. They've also talked about possibly inserting Thranduil into the Last Alliance part of the prologue, and maybe working Tauriel into the movie in some small way too.

Which would be kinda awkward, what with the actors who'd be involved in those scenes having aged so much since then and all. Probably better to leave Bombadil out, his absence doesn't really hurt the movie anyway.

Peter Jackson did talk about The Lord of The Rings ultimate box set which will come out in the future .

There's plenty of bits and pieces that were shot which never made it in, not even to the extended editions, like the scenes of young Aragorn with Arwen. But yeah, I do think that Jackson will tighten up the VFX here and there, as well as tightening up the continuity between both trilogies. LOTR might even get a 3D conversion too.

Mmm, that was what I was referring to as the "Whole Middle Earth" boxed set. (No idea what it'll be called, obviously; I was kinda riffing on the "Whole Earth Catalog", a hippy book from the early 70s, a treasured copy of which sits on my bookshelf to remind me of an alternate world we could have been living in.)

I don't think anyone doubted there would be yet another release of LotR in some form once the last Hobbit EE comes out.

LOTR will be 15 years old next year so we might see a hobbit plus LOTR ultimate box set soon .

I hope so! As long as it's done right. Like if he spends 18 mill per film to convert them. Go big or got home, like James Cameron with Titanic! I think the Hobbit is underwhelming in 3D.

Just remaster Fellowship's theatrical cut, couldn't care less about more footage.

I'd love to see the deleted scenes, but I second the call for a remastered theatrical cut.

I'm very happy with the extended version Blus as they are (which I prefer as a whole over the theatricals) and I have no desire for anything 3D anymore as that fad wore off quickly for me, so it will be very hard to sell me anymore LOTR.
