Best Buy updated the pic of the exclusive set they are offering. For $119.99, it contains 6 small statues, your own personal replica of the one ring to wear, the sword of Isildur, Legolas' Bow with one arrow, Gimli's Ax plus copies of the script for each LOTR movie signed by the Peter Jackson, Viggo, Elijah, Orlando and other cast members.

Just Kidding, I can only see that it has the 6 small statues.

That's exactly what it looks like to me... nothing spectacular for an extra $45.

So 6 statues are... (I know it's too small to view at the moment) ?

My guesses:
- Gandalf
- Frodo
- Gollum
- Aragorn
- Legolas
- Gimli

Lame set, also, looks like they are taken straight from one of the Weta Chess sets as well. No where near worth the price.

I was hoping for steelbooks at that price. I will just look for the best price on the regular set.

As a sidenote, I bought the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition LOTR (UK version) for my bf this Christmas... it was £50 new. It seems to have recently gone out of print and now going for £250 + on Amazon now - feels like I made a good purchase!
I did the same thing.
It's been at least three years since I've last watched the movies because I wanted to read the books ("The Hobbit" too), I've just started "The return of the King" so I'll probably be able to finish it before the EE BDs come out.
Do it, you won't regret it.

I like those editions as well since I prefer having each book on its own and they use Tolkien's original cover designs. Unfortunately, they're not available in the US. I was able to get two of them from a Canadian seller on Amazon for a decent price. I had to get the third from Amazon UK, which cost a fortune (mostly in shipping!).

Aw that's a shame - they are definitely my favourite versions in terms of artwork, and I'm a sucker for hardbacks anyway. The Hobbit is also available in a similar version. Looks like Two Towers has gone OOP on Amazon but I've seen it for sale elsewhere. Got no money at the moment so hopefully they won't get rare all of a sudden in the next few months!

Well, it seems like the rumors are true. The films will be split into 2 discs each as I saw the Blu-Ray ad at the theater. F'N stupid, I'll just hang onto my DVDs.

If you've never read LOTR before, I would suggest starting with The Hobbit(if you haven't read that either)....
I think I'm one of the few people who thinks The Hobbit is actually better than the LOTR trilogy!

It's not rumors, it'c confirmed from the official announcement. And the DVDs are split into 2 discs too so I'm not sure what you mean.

Anyway, yes, The Hobbit a much better read as the story is simpler and straight forward. Nevertheless the battles are still epic.

While I too would have preferred an uninterrupted single-disc presentation for each film to avoid the mandatory disc-change break (assuming equally transparent video compression), I hardly see how keeping a pathetically over-compressed MPEG2 480p copy of the film with lossy audio... that's *also* spread over 2 discs, is preferred over upgrading to a top-notch 1080p compression with lossless audio whether or not the films get spread over 2 discs.

If the disc-break is such a deal-breaker for you that you won't watch even the DVDs, then the logic to avoid the HD version is sound. But if you'll watch the inferior image/sound of the DVDs and endure the disc-change, why not at least have transparent picture and sound???

So you are willing to swap discs with the DVD edition, but refuse to do so for better PQ/AQ with the blu ray version????

The maps in the U.K. edition fold out of the book in a simpler manner; when I unfolded the map in my edition, the pages stuck together and I ended up ripping it out.
Grand Bob, Why don't you invite Nametag to join us when we read LOTR together on the group you started?

The extended edition version of The Fellowship of the Ring has been remastered from the original 2k digital files. Also, with the extended editions being spread over two discs each, they should have less video compression.

Great idea, I will do that. I'm shooting for May 28th for this year's start date on the Lord of the Rings forum group, for anyone interested (link: https://forum.blu-ray.com/group.php?groupid=71). It seems to be a suitable warm-up for the EE release a month later.

Hello, Grand Bob! I just joined the Lord of the Rings social group a few days ago, but I only have about 150 pages left to go in ROTK, so I won't be joining you guys on this one, maybe next time. Sometimes I like to read The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and the LOTR; in that order(which is what I'm almost finished doing).

I'm doing it out of principle. New Line is obviously doing this to make more money by having us buy a needless 2 disc layout. A Blu-Ray is capable of holding 9 hours of HD footage, they could've easily fit the films on one disc each, but chose not to because New Line is greedy and screwing us the consumers again for profit. I will wait many more years until they do the right thing and release the Extended versions whole.
