It works as a piece with a beginning, a middle and an end (of sorts), while the other two just pick up the story from whatever point. [edit] It reminds me of the original Star Wars in that way, the other two movies rely completely and utterly on having seen the prior one but Star Wars still works brilliantly as something that can be watched on its own whenever, wherever.

I am going to spend today watching the EE Trilogy. I have been video streaming alot lately so I will be glad to watch this one on Blu, though I will regret having to get up and change out the discs for parts 2. Video streaming has made me quite lazy, but you can not beat the quality of the movie on Blu-ray.

I just did that two weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. I managed to watch the first two films the same day and then the final one the next evening. I need to purchase the hobbit extended trilogy now and get rid of my standard theatrical releases. The sets look positively amazing sitting side by side. Have fun!

I've been thinking of rewatching the EE trilogy lately and selling the theatrical trilogy. Thing is, I could never watch the two trilogy versions back-to-back to judge which one to keep. Not exactly a first-world dilemma, but a minor hangup to be sure ...

Just started going thru the EE extras again after my recent Hobbit/LOTR rewatch, already done the Pete/Fran/Philippa commentary and disc 1 of Fellowship's extras, now I'm on to disc 2 and I noticed a curious coincidence. Ian McKellen mentions how Ian Holm does something a bit different on every take and I could've been listening to him describing Martin Freeman's acting style, because it's said many times on the Hobbit extras that he also changes it up for every take. It's not a completely unnatural occurrence to find two actors with a similar approach, natch, but both men play the same character so I thought that was a cute little bit of happenstance.

I was interested in picking this up to upgrade from the theatrical cut.Anyways I was wondering if anybody knew if the Digital copy would still work on this? I know its been out a few years but I have found that codes have worked after they supposedly expire. Also is it a disc based digital copy or you just have to enter the code on a certain website? Thanks

Down to $39.96!

I had $20 worth of Amazon Credit to use so with shipping/import fees it works out to be sub £25.

Very happy with that!

Then just go with the two discers for now. Remember, Warner is going to triple, quadruple and infinity dip. Personally my next purchase will be a big set with eventual 3D, Atmos or dts X, exclusive new bonus discs, along with current extras.
No need to spend the extra money if you don't have too...

Can someone let me know about the PQ in the theatrical versions. I picked up the Theatrical releases on BF. I know people prefer the Extended but the Theatrical's are too long for me as it is. Since there are no BD reviews for it, how is the PQ for these theatrical versions?

The PQ for Two Towers and Return of the King are both pretty good. The PQ for Fellowship is very soft. On the plus side, Fellowship's colors are consistent with the other two, unlike on the Extended Cuts.

Are the two disk editions still available? If so, where? I thought they were discontinued.

So much for them being a Target exclusive...
I saw them in Wal*Mart last night as part of the Black Friday Promo

Thank you, very accurate answer. Fellowship looks very soft indeed but I actually prefer the color palette in the theatrical version

Thank you. I noticed most of the difference in FOTR, the Extended Edition has this green hue to it? Which I dont even like. Though the Theatrical does look a bit softer. Also TT and ROTK look almost identical.

It was a $6.96 title, good reason to keep it?

Went back 16 pages, Ctrl+F'ing "green", didn't see this answered. I missed the Prime Day sale earlier this year when the Extended Edition box set was offered, but see it's back to a pretty good price tonight.

So my question is, with all this green tint controversy, did they ever "fix" the issue with Fellowship in any of the individual Extended Edition releases, or are they the same discs as found in the EE Box Set?

If they're the same, I'll just go ahead and buy the box set. If they're the different, I might go that route as I kind of don't need the box set. When I sold off my DVD collection, I kept a few titles, Lord of the Rings EE sets being some of them, so I really don't need any of the bonus footage attached to the blu-ray box set.

Not only were revisions not done, they never even acknowledged the issue.
