Plus better audio. Definitely worth the upgrade to blu for any fan of Tolkien.

Eh, screw it. Might as well bank on the purchase.
For $27, you can't beat it.

So my question is, with all this green tint controversy, did they ever "fix" the issue with Fellowship in any of the individual Extended Edition releases, or are they the same discs as found in the EE Box Set?

If they're the same, I'll just go ahead and buy the box set. If they're the different, I might go that route as I kind of don't need the box set. When I sold off my DVD collection, I kept a few titles, Lord of the Rings EE sets being some of them, so I really don't need any of the bonus footage attached to the blu-ray box set.
So I came across an interesting comment on the
which does the side-by-side clip of Gandalf visiting Bilbo in the early part of FOTR. (One side is the EE and the other is the theatrical.)

I just got the Extended trilogy, and this problem has definitely been FIXED. But it must be a new version of the Extended Edition Trilogy as the box is different. It doesn't have the opening part that reveals the map. It looks like this:

I got it from Target in Canada! Get this versions guys!
That imgur link is very interesting. That boxset doesn't match the picture from Amazon.com.

Is it possible there is another version of the EE boxset floating around with the problem corrected?

I've never seen a shred of compelling evidence that there's another version out there. Many people who bought the disc when this whole hoopla was originally happening thought they got a "fixed" version simply because it's much less visible in actual viewing than A/B comparison.

Yup. The hysteria doesn't match the experience of the average Joe just watching it on a display set to god knows what settings and not flicking back and forth.

was there a packaging for this set that was similar/same to the one used in the first print of extened hobbit trilogy? i really enjoy the packaging for the hobbit extened trilogy, i went to bestbuy to look at their movies, saw this, but noticed its a cheaper, slipcover thingy, not the nice thick magnetic closing packaging of the latter.

did the first prints have this kind of packaging and they switched? or are they always like this. im thinking of tracking the old one down if thats the case... if not I'd also like to know. thanks guys.

Yes, when it was first released. If you go to the Amazon US listing for the BD EE, the last image at the top left shows how the packaging used to be.

The problem is that when they re-color timed Fellowship from the newly created digital 2k DI (the only film in the LOTR trilogy that had not received one), they overdid the green saturation by a factor of 11. It's a blanket greenish cast throughout the film rather than scene or even frame specific color correction and it also changed the dynamic range. The lazy man's color timing.

You probably won't see a better version of Fellowship until UHD Blu-ray when they could have another stab at more carefully color timing the film... and even then it will be upconverted from 2k masters. Though, you will get 10 bit video depth, cinema quality color space, and maybe even an HDR grade. And probably Dolby Atmos.

Peter Jackson loves immersive sound, so I would bet they'll get an Atmos overhaul for their UHD Blu-ray release.

The next re-release of The Hobbit trilogy will more than likely have Atmos as well since they were mixed that way theatrically and it would be super easy to add now that Atmos (and DTS: X) was included in the official BDA Blu-ray specs.

Enjoy them!
I wish I could watch these for the first time again.

Return of the King (ROTK) - I still remember going to see this and the specific theater I saw it in.

I'm not a huge fantasy genre fan, but the books and these movies are some of the best of their craft.

During FOTR I got up to go to the bathroom, went out the wrong door, and locked myself out of the theater.

Luckily my friend heard me out there and let me back in...
