My 2 cents: that scene definitely has noticeably awkward CGI. Frodo’s movement seems to stutter as he runs, superimposed, into the CGI mountain. Hard to see on a small screen perhaps. Very obvious though, when I watched on my large LED TV.
Agree with the comment that the LOTR trilogy has some CGi scenes that are not aging well. Please note: I adore these films. But while the practical effects will probably still look great in the year 2118, some of the CGI is already looking cartoony in 2018. |

For the most part, I agree. But there are still some shots that are pretty iffy.
As I said in the other thread, most of the complaints I’ve seen about The Hobbit can easily be applied to LotR. I think LotR just gets a pass because it’s older and came first. That’s just my opinion though. |

My Best Man at my wedding was raising one teen and one pre-teen, and he's as big of a cinema fan as I am. We'd have to grit our teeth watching classic f/x in acclaimed films like War of the Worlds, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, King Kong '33, Harryhausen films, etc., because the kids would start laughing..."That's so fake! Ha! Ha! Ha!" Point is, if you fail to place achievements in film craft in their historical context, then no film is safe from the mockery and scorn of pre-teens living in a new world built on the hard work and breakthroughs of the old. The argument isn't, "this old movie is fake, the f/x don't hold up, ha ha ha!" The argument is, "Wow, look at what these people achieved twenty, thirty, even ninety years ago. That's so impressive."
Metropolis turns 90 this year. It's so fake. |

I contend it’s all about what age/where you were in life when you saw a given film. People change over the years, as do their likes/dislikes. It’s almost as if you’re encapsulated in ranging time era that can be influenced by so many external things: family, friends, school, career, kids etc. Also surrounding memories associated with said film viewing plays a role for some. Pretty interesting stuff when you start to flip the pages if life backwards as you...*sniff*...*sniff*...*sigh*...get older. ![]() |

SEVEN HUNDRED and FORTY SEVEN.
That's how many pages this thread has now. I'm here to ask about news of this trilogy coming out in 4K UHD, but I don't see any in the last few pages and there is no way I'm going to read 747 pages. So I ask: What news of a 4K UHD release of this trilogy? (Hopefully the extended versions.) I did see this in a thread on Fellowship color timing from not to long back and found this encouraging clip from it: Quote:
For those of us that saw these films in the theater in all their glory, please release 4K UHD versions of these from the original elements! Chris |

I just revisited them last week.....the VFX already stick out like a sore thumb just from my 4KUHD player and 4K OLED upscaling them. I'm reasonably sure WB is not going to spend the mountain of cash it would take to remaster the VFX....right?

I wouldn't bet they would. However, we might see upscales.

No way the VFX are getting redone in any way, and frankly I wouldn't want them to be. Good or bad, they are what they are and I don't like the idea of revising them, or we're in LucasLand. I just hope the UHD theatrical cuts are treated with as much love as the extendeds were on BD.

What is the difference between the extended edition trilogy set released in 2011 vs the 2012 set, were there any new transfers or new masters used?

Ok because I just saw the Return of the King solo release review and they mentioned it uses a new master from the 2011 version, is there any truth to that?

At the current price of $80 per title for the Blu-ray-audio discs, that's just $240 for all of them. A mere pittance to most of the video and audiophiles on these forums.
I have the first one on CD and the other two as 320 kbps mp3s, so I could skimp and just spend $160 to upgrade those two, but then it would not look "complete", so I guess I will have to get them all. |

Not exactly cheap, but a pretty typical price for a 5LP set. The packaging looks beautiful as well. I'm going to have a hard time convincing myself not to pick this up. |
