I did see An Unexpected Journey at the theater in 3D 48fps and using motion interpolation is definitely close.
Same here, I watch the Hobbitses with motionflow on, NOT on full soap opera mode but Sony TVs have an excellent black frame insertion system into which some mild interpolation can be added and it works so well with these movies. Most everything else it just looks weird with any kind of motionflow, but these flicks? They look weird anyway.

As you say, they were shot at 48fps but something people don't realise is that the 24fps version isn't simply the 48fps with half the frames chopped out, the 270-degree shutter angle would look too choppy so they had to use motion interpolation to 'blend' frames to create a more 24fps-esque cadence to the movement - and yet it still has a very 'video like' sense of motion blur to it. In some ways this gives the motionflow something extra to hang on to, if that makes sense, and it really is my preferred way of watching that trilogy. (If this does ever hit UHD disc I hope they can come up with a way to translate the 48fps version across because 48fps is not in the UHD spec.)

Back when I was 3D-capable I hugely enjoyed watching those versions with the MotionFlow on. But the 2D versions? Nah, gimme ol' 24fps.

Thank you. I don't mind used but looks like that one on Bullmoose is gone already. I guess I could go the CA route, but I'd prefer to have all three of the US 5-disc editions. Thank you.

I watched the Fellowship this week and have to say for the first time ever, the teal tint bugged me a bit as my eyes were drawn to it than before. Prior, I never found it an issue. I may watch the theatrical version again soon just for comparison's sake and it's been a long time since I've seen the theatricals. On any rate, hopefully they will rectify the color with the eventual UHD BDs.

Ugh, not for me, no thanks. I saw Unexpected Journey in 3D HFR and I thought it was dreadful. The fact that turning on your TV's interpolation "feature" approximates it pretty well would definitely explain why I hated it. I made sure to catch screenings of the other 2 films without it.

That being said, if they can pull it off in UHD with the 48-frames, that would be cool for those that enjoyed it. I would definitely pass though.

Not sure where to post this but The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be back in theaters this weekend at Regal Cinemas. I wish I could go since I never saw them in theaters but I’m already devoted to the Harry Potter rereleases at Cinemark. Anyway, it’s a great weekend at the movies!

Some reason they aren’t showing the trilogy in the right order on some days at my theater.

Bright green water? That's interesting. I'm going to assume minions of the Dark Lord dumped a bunch of Shamrock Shakes into it. But why?

I wanted to go too, but I already made plans for the Marvel Film Festival. Regal is doing a Conjuring marathon this weekend as well. With all of these and then 2001 in IMAX this past week too, there's been a LOT of rereleases at the same time!

Might be one of the top uhd releases ever. I'd be tripping all over myself preordering that uber steelbook special edition trilogy set.

Marcus Cinemas in the midwest had the EEs in theaters last month. I caught the first two (but missed ROTK due to travel/forgetfulness), and what an experience it was seeing the EEs on the big screen with a theater full of fans.

That said, to complete my run-through I watched ROTK at home and I gotta say, upscaled by my player/TV to 4k it is one damn good looking presentation. We all want UHDs and hope for them to be new true 4K masters. But this has convinced me that even if they don't get a new master, a good HDR pass along with the already great detailing on these will make them some breathtaking discs.

I just watched the EE BDs again and they sure hold up well. I sure would love a UHD set.

No screenings listed (at least on Fandango) for TTT or ROTK in my area.

There are a few Regals near me who are doing FOTR (doesn't say if it's extended or not)....but they're only doing one screening, today, between 11:15am and Noon.

Oh well. I actually got in a nice EE marathon last September at my local Alamo Drafthouse with a 9 course feast so, I am good with just revisiting them at home for now.
