The tint never bothered me much until the last viewing several months ago. I'm sure the next time it will be regraded differently. It just seems like it was applied in a lazy manner. The shadow detail (not crushed, but dark) seems a bit different too compared to the other two movies. Something just seems a bit off.

Yup, I think I’ve posted in this thread how I thought it was weird that it’s just a “blanket” tint applied to the entire movie, rather than touching up a few shots or scenes.

And it’s also weird that it wasn’t applied to shots in the other two movies that use footage from Fellowship of the Ring.

I still think there’s something they aren’t telling us.

I’m fine with the green in the second two because it is applied skillfully and with nuance so as not to sicken the &$@“ out of skin tones. But FOTR is unwatchable to me. The whole tone of the shire is completely changed and no longer a bright beutiful land like it was theatrically. I only watch the theatrical edition now for that one even though it’s less resolution, the color is more important to me in this particular case.

FOTR, unlike the other two, was digitally remastered. It was a movie that never got a digital intermediate (and as such, never had much of a consistent grading either). The new grading (as presented in this new digital master), wether one likes it or not, or wether one thinks it was applied carelessly, was intentional. TTT and ROTK were not remastered, therefore one can't expect the same treatment there.

Yeah but they still could have changed the footage from Fellowship in the other movies to match it, come on.

I might be wrong, but didn't someone in the production process of the BD master of Fellowship openly admit the over-cast dim green push was unfortunate? It's on line somewhere. I ain't gonna plow through years of posts to find it. When I watch The Lord of the Rings, I watch Fellowship's DVD upscaled on my display, then switch to the BDs of Towers and Return of the King. The problem isn't really that FOTR is more *green*, the problem is that it's more *dark and green*. The lovely Shire now looks like an overcast English day before a hard rain.

Yeah, I watch the DVD of FOTR extended too. The green tint makes everything look sickly to me.

With how long the arguments had waged, I wouldn't be surprised if that surprise got buried somewhere, but it's still sad that despite the clear evidence of the color changing back to what it's supposed to be during the end credits, people still want to defend what's on the DVD as an artistic choice.

Hopefully they correct this on a future release for 4K or something.

I watch the BD of FOTR extended. The higher resolution makes everything look gorgeous to me.

Me too but I have a special color setting only for the Extended BD of FOTR.
Less green and pretty close to the colors of the Extended DVD.

I'd never go back to the DVD for this, the EE BD of FOTR has some moments of astonishing clarity (more so than the other two films, Two Towers in particular has some very smeary moments baked into the DI) and the colour doesn't bother me, never has done.

Why does this LOTR set come with 15 discs, and the Hobbit one with 9....

But when you buy the complete Middle Earth set of both trilogies, it comes with 30 discs, 18 for LOTR and 12 for Hobbit? What's on the extra discs and why doesn't the above sets have them?

It looks like each movie includes the bonus disc from the theatrical version, in addition to the ones from the extended versions. Check out the links below and look at the backs of the cases for examples:

I'm going to out on a limb and guess DVD inclusions. I have the Extended Hobbit films in 3D, have the LOTR films extended on blu, neither came with DVDs. If you really want the answer to your question, Google is your friend. better than asking strangers.

I have been googling it. I came here after the fact to ask, because this place isn't for strangers. It's the go-to place for all bluray talk. So....duh.

As for comparing the backs of all the sets, I've done that already and saw what was listed and it looks like some "special features " discs are missing on the individual trilogy sets. I was asking here to see if anyone owns the Middle Earth set and could shed some definitive light on exactly what that was. Exactly what special features are missing.

After all, when it comes down to it I want to own the one with the most special features and that clearly looks to be the 30 disc set. However, during my research I've seen several complaints against the 30 disc set that say the special feature DVDs are region locked. So.... if I have to buy the 15 and 9 disc sets of both trilogies, I'd like to know for sure what I'm missing out on. Like beyond just "Special Features Disc 4 & 5"

I just turn the greens way down on my tv setting, looks pretty good. Better than before at least.

To the people saying "oh it's supposed to look green, it's The Shire". Well the whole movie doesnt take place in the Shire, the color green isn't the only one in the movie. What about the blue skies, what about scenes in the snow, it just looks strange, obviously not intended! And the night scenes and scenes that are supposed to be dark look more blue-ish now rather than dark and somber.

Because the LOTR extras are on 3 DVDs (they didn’t bother upgrading them to HD\blu ray discs and are the same ones from the DVD releases) thus giving each film five discs.

The Hobbit, being newer, has all of its special features on a single blu-ray disc, giving each film three discs.

As for that 30disc set, I’d wager that it is the same content as the “shelf” set that was released over here a couple of years ago that also had 30 discs...

Yes, I do believe it's the exact same set, minus all the bells and whistles of the box, the book, etc. So what's on the extra discs and why don't the individual sets include them?

Maybe it was the Theatrical Special Features. Are those really that different from the Extended features?

The 30 Disc Set:

Hobbit 9 Disc Set:

LOTR 15 Disc Set:

I wouldn’t go back to the dvd either because, well, that’d be awful. DVD is so awful to watch on most occasions that it’s practically not an option for me anymore unless we’re talking about old school television or animated shows that may never see the Blu-ray light.

But oh, how I still loathe what they did to the EE bluray. The color timing isn’t bad, per se, but it’s blatantly inaccurate and evidence supports it wasn’t the intent. I couldn’t argue in favor of that no matter how fitting the green tint may be.
