What is this? I see no links. I found the video on youtube with the same text, but no links. No studio, no PJ mention, nothing. This could be anything, including a complete hoax.

Then there's the next bit (emphasis mine):

As the original source was a mess, we had to remaster the content and then transfer/grade into PQ HDR Rec. 2020. We did our best with the only blu-ray source available.
Aside from my question of "who is we?", if this is a legitimate announcement from those actually making the 4K UHD set of this trilogy, should we all be worried about the last statement? It sounds to me that while it's regraded, it's not a "Complete REMASTERED" at all but rather is coming from the existing 2K DIs.

What does "original source was a mess" mean? These films aren't THAT old, and with all of the work done on the STD vs Extended version, with all the extras means that relatively decent care was taken of the materials used and probably archival as well, yes? No?

Say what you will about the value of the IMDb top 250 list in respect to how great a film that makes it, but with all 3 of these films still sitting in the top 15 of that list, it at least means that they're big cash cows.

So why wouldn't all of the best efforts be done now for actually COMPLETE remasters, scans of the negs in 4K or better, before any color regrading?

Honestly, I have no idea.

Not my video. So I really can't explain what was done.

Only included the video description in spoiler tag.

I think that's okay up until the film has been released, cinema/DVD/Blu-ray, then it's sort of owned by everyone, so the director coming back on the scene & changing the look, cutting out scenes, whatever, is on thin ice.

There was some fan project that took the Luma channel of the EE Blu, and combined the Chroma channel from the DVD with it, fixing the tint issue for the most part.

I only watch the theatrical BD version of Fellowship, as I am not a fan of the teal tint. For the most part, the extended scenes in Fellowship or Return of the King do not significantly add to the story, IMO.

Dude...it's literally a homebrew upscale and "regrade" using the Blu-rays, HDTV sources, whatever they can get their hands on. There's quite a little cottage industry that's sprung up of bedroom encoders "regrading" stuff into HDR, complete with grand proclamations about what HDR is and does, and it's all utter ****ing nonsense.

In that case, no thanks, and these forums are really no place for such garbage.

There's so much important stuff only seen in the extended ROTK, especially for fans of the books: the death of Saruman, the death of Gothmog, the Houses of Healing ( complete with song by Liv! ), Gandalf vs. Witch-King, the Mouth of Sauron...

Not to mention a skull avalanche.

Also I notice there are 2 listings for the extended edition trilogy. One came out 2011 and one in 2012 what is the difference?

First release included Digital Copies .... specs list a slipcover as well. Thought it was a J-card. Don't remember, mines buried in a box whichever it was.

Not to mention a skull avalanche.
The houses of healing scene was good because it actually explains why we see Faramir and Eowyn together at the coronation of Aragorn. Most of the other EE scenes, including the ones you mention, were not related to the book and were examples of Jackson's penchant for spectacle, although I think he did a very good job overall with LotR. My understanding was that the extra footage of the EE's would offer a more in-depth treatment of material in the book - of which there was no lack. For example, why not use the EE scenes to highlight the discovery of Baldor at the locked door in the Dwimorberg ("Hither shall the flowers of simbelmyne come never until the world's end... Nine mounds and seven the are now green with grass, and through all the long years he has lain at the door that he could not unlock. Whither does it lead? None shall ever know!"). That would have provided more depth and interest to the story than the unintentionally humorous avalanche of skulls. Obviously there are more examples that could easily be made, but there was so much wasted potential in the extended scenes. But as always, I realize that is only my opinion.

Most of the ones I mentioned were from the books ( though of course Saruman's death was moved to Orthanc so the film could avoid having to deal with The Scouring of the Shire ).

How soon does anyone think we will get the 4K versions? If not for a while I might get the extended.
