I’m sure if Jackson told WB he would do the Ultimate Extended Cut for free they would green light it. If he wants it released as bad as he says then he should have no problem with that and just have them pay for everything else.

people don’t work for free, unless proceeds go to charity. He will not do that.

I know that but that’s the reason WB won’t green light it cause it would cost to much. He would still make a ton off of the sales.

Sans green light, hopefully.

Heck, round up all those people who cut down The Hobbit to 1 movie and have them do it. They did that for free, why not this too?

I think alot of those unused deleted scenes from LOTR probably require CGI FX work to complete them. It's not just a case of loading all the footage into video editor and stitching it together. Plus there may be foley and ADR work required on the sound.

Wasn't pretty much the whole trilogy ADR'd from beginning to end? It's quite apparent in a lot of places.

I mentioned Kickstarter in a somewhat joking way earlier, but now I really think that would be cool. I don’t know if a big company like WB would “let” there be a Kickstarter for something like this, but I would *gladly* throw some money at it to get more Middle-earth material (whether it’s new scenes in the movie, just the deleted footage on its own, more making-of material, ANYTHING lol).

Not unusual since so much of it was shot on location.

I honestly have no idea what state the unused deleted scenes are in (other than apparently all the original film was kept so the image quality should be excellent) or how much work was done on them before they were abandoned.

Some of the deleted scenes were discussed in an excellent book called ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE - PETER JACKSON AND THE MAKING OF MIDDLE but I can't recall where in this massive tome that material appeared. Anyway this is one of the most fascinating books I've ever read about film making (and I've got quite a few). Highly recommended - especially if you're a fan of the films! Trust me - you won't be disappointed.

By the way Peter Jackson said he offered to re-edit the entire thing into an extended-extended cut using even more unseen scenes for the forthcoming 20th anniversary and the studio turned him down.
Never heard that before. As said above, he and his disc producer Michael Pellerin enquired about reshaping the scattergun LOTR EE extras into the Hobbit EE-esque 'day in the life' format, inserting bloopers and unfinished deleted scenes as well as previously unseen making of footage (of which they have literally hundreds of hours of material), but Warners said no and offered them the cash to make a new feature-length documentary instead. This time it was Jackson doing the turning down.

It's the "paying for everything else" part that's the problem with Jackson's blockbuster movies, always has been. His personal payment is almost inconsequential because when he owns or part-owns all the post-production companies then he's going to be paid either way. Part of the animosity between him and New Line came about because they felt he was taking them for a ride, using the influx of money intended for LOTR to outfit and upgrade his own swathe of post-production services in the process.

The book doesn't exactly go into major detail, they talked about the deleted Arwen stuff mostly and even then it was just a brief summary from Fran or Philippa, that Liv Tyler just wasn't all that convincing with the action stuff so they erased her from Helm's Deep. More interesting to me was the comment about PJ crafting the Extended Editions, that when he was doing them he felt that he was wrecking the pacing.

Not just that, they had a lot of sound issues in the set-based stuff as well, due to being in close proximity to train tracks and airports.

Ah yes, they had to employ people just to spot the planes all day long during the studio shoots in Wellington.

If Peter Jackson wanted to cut together an extended extended cut of Lord of the Rings for free, he wouldn't need WB's permission to do that, he could've done it any time in the last 15 years. Then he could tell WB "If you want to release it, here's the bill for the labor of the crew." I don't think he's doing this because he has something that he wants really badly to release, I think he's doing it for money. Not criticizing him for it, and I'd certainly buy a longer cut of any or all of them, but I don't really believe there's anything in the vault that he really really wishes the fans could see.

I hunted about but now I can't find the recent interview where Jackson actually talks about new extended cuts of Lord Of The Rings. Here's the closest I could find but it's from quite a few years and he doesn't specify whether he's talking about deleted scenes or BTS stuff.

Do we really need longer versions of these films? Let me rephrase that: do I?

He's mentioned doing revised editions for years, even in the commentaries for the movies he references wanting to change this or that. Yours is the first I've heard of him going to Warners to officially request doing longer versions and them turning him down. Nothing was said about that at all in the Bits' podcast with Michael Pellerin.
