I may have to get them on BD instead of 4K, if the picture really is that much of a difference.

Of course the color and contrast can't fully be judged since the 4K screenshots are converted to SDR from HDR, but comparing the finer detail (such as the leaves against the sky in the 3rd comparison on Caps-a-holic) it certainly seems that the grain on the new 1080p Blu-ray is natural... and makes it infinitely more inane that the 4K was scrubbed so hard.

I would be shocked if there isn't eventually a new release (in 4K or whatever the next format may be... 8K?) that's essentially the 4K transfers without the extra DNR when the new 1080p Blu-ray discs look that naturally filmic.
The new Blus still look mightily processed in those shots, they're nowhere near "naturally filmic" IMO and have more pronounced edge ringing than the UHDs. BUT they do indeed appear to have more grain than the UHDs despite stemming from the same underlying "4K" masters, it's kinda bizarre. Ordered them so I can see for myself.

So without reading this whole thread. what's the consensus on the better set?

vs.

I don't have a 4K tv yet and the individual 4K Trilogies don't include the standard bd's i don't think. I think the only set that includes standard bd and 4K is 31 disc Middle Earth collection (which i don't really want to buy).

I don't think there's any consensus, it's a pick your poison situation. I think the remastered set is the way to go. I much prefer the color grading on all three movies.

It's all over the map in terms of what people like, but I like the remastered more. The clear winner is Fellowship of the Ring which finally gets rid of that weird green/yellow tint. The original set had a bit more detail and grain, but Two Towers and Return of the King had this kind of dreamy haze to them which some liked and other didn't. That haze is now gone in the remastered set which can be a good thing or bad thing how you look at it. Special effects, look a bit more clear but also look more like special effects which the haze kind of helped block. Overall, I still pick the remastered set because the colors and details are more vibrant although seem detail is lost as well.

Does the second set also contain all of the extras?

I don't guess I have a preference as i've never seen the EE's, so nothing prior to judge one or the other by except the TE's. I guess i'll probably grab the remastered EE's.

According to the info on this site, it should.

Just basing on stills, the remastered version of Fellowship looks superior, especially when it comes to color grading. And given what we've learned from caps-a-holic looks less tampered with in terms of the grain levels compared to the actual 4K release.

I'm hoping they will release standalone versions, since I only really want to replace my original EE release of Fellowship.

As far as the Remastered Blu-ray of Fellowship is concerned I actually don't see less detail, but in some cases a bit more. I've also seen some issues of aliasing in the previous Blu-ray that has been fixed in the remaster.

Look at Frodo's face in this comparison. I would say the Remaster definitely wins in detail.

Look at leaves and branches and the girl's hat in this comparison, you can see some jaggy edges get cleaned up.

I have the 4K UHD set but none of the six discs will play in my Sony player without locking up so I got the new Remastered BD set. I am fine with them, sure they would be better without the DNR but not having to look at that sickly green filter on Fellowship anymore is a good enough trade off, IMO.

What's the difference between that 4K set vs this one:

I'm talking about the Remastered 1080p release based on the new 4K scans vs the actual 4K UHD.

The actual 4K release has more DNR than the Remastered 1080p set. At least when looking at Fellowship of the Ring.

I wish they'd put the remastered Extended Blu-rays out individually. I'd like to get the remastered Fellowship but I'm fine with the other two the way they are.
