By what I've heard and read (I may be wrong, since I'm no expert) but PJ scanned the original into a digital format so he could make the corrections digitally that he wanted to make. He did make a lot of changes that were incorporated into the digital master. BUT there were a lot of changes made after that went into the original product, including the DNR. For this release, they just went back to the original digital master, pre DNR and color corrections. There were no further manipulations from the original Digital Master, by what I understood.

Ah, okay. That makes sense.

I'm really psyched for this now! Fellowship's always been really soft, all the way back to the Theatrical print I saw in 2001. This looks so much more detailed than I ever remember seeing.

Yeah, that Rivendell shot sold me. Fellowship Extended is going to rock so hard....

...still going to wait for individual releases though.

The increased detail is really impressive- it's far more than I expected!

However, my memory of the movie in the theater is limited and probably not accurate considering how dim most projector bulbs are in your average theater... but I was wondering which color timing is correct? I suppose I could compare it to my DVDs as I believe they have the same color timing as what I saw in the theater, or at least close enough that they didn't stick out as looking different from what I remembered.

FOTR looks a bit more realistic with the new BD color timing, but the golden hue that you see in a lot of the early Shire scenes, particularily in Bilbo's house, is gone in the new BD. That is what worries me...

I agree going from the screenshots the PQ is tremendous

Weird that there hasn't been a review yet of the set when the online retailers are already shipping to customers

The EE's look much better. The color timing looks more natural and the detail is far superior. If anything, the theatrical BD had a harsh red push and was lacking in color depth. Look at the detail on Gandalf's face!

yeah that shot isn't the best but the others hit or miss. You must be kidding here there is no question that this is a BIG HIT. Just look at the detail. It is impressive. This goes beyond reference quality

Yeah but that ring has pretty much no detail at all if compared to theatrical version.

Return of the King looked gorgeous on Blu. TT was not that bad but yea Fellowship is a mess. But I really don't like the extended editions as it just crams in a bunch of deleted scenes. I would much rather have a proper directors cut. Do we really need to see elves migrating? Or Grima spitting on Aragorns hand? You don't spit on a future Kings hand. It just cheapens the character.

Grima's not exactly a heroic character. Him spitting on Aragorn's hand does not "cheapen" the character.

Not Grima, Aragorn. It cheapens him that he allows people to spit on him. I don't need to see that
