Happen to be close to a 120fps showing and I've got my ticket. Can't wait to check it out.

didn't like the trailers, didn't like HFR of Billy Lynn. I generally like Ang Lee and Will Smith...still a coin toss on seeing 3D HFR for me, and I still haven't tossed the damn coin yet.

I'm going to try to see this with my wife but we will be avoiding HFR like the plague. If the UHD is 60fps it will have to be a pass for me.

so, best check with your local theater(s) directly.

If you don’t believe that Puente Hills is showing the 3D 120fps iteration in their Dolby theatre, then I suggest you call (626) – 810- 7949 and speak to the manager Britney M. for confirmation. 3D+HFR will be 60fps in their IMAX theatre.

Hey dude, I believe you. Didn't mean to offend.

I actually think we're on the same page.

I was just trying to emphasize that it's hard to tell from AMC's website whether a show is 60fps or 120fps. Therefore, I agree with you that if the theater is not on that list, the best bet is to call directly. And probably talk to a manager or supervisor who is aware of the differences.

Saw it in 60fps HFR and it looked great. The 3D is pretty mild aside from the action sequences, so I doubt I'll miss it much. But I don't see myself running out to buy this day one, if at all. The action sequences and de-aging tech are really cool but beyond that, there isn't much of a movie here.

I do not anything about the technical aspects of this movie, but the discussion about how it was made and how it will look is enough to make me interested.

Is there a 'cliff notes' version for me to read about fps HFR or similar topics so at least have some clue what is going on? (Yes, I can google it, but I thought there might be some good recommendations from the experts.)

Sorry to be pedantic, but it's Cliff's Notes (now CliffsNotes) not "Cliff Notes".

Generally speaking at 24fps fast moving objects have more motion-blur than stationary ones, as you increase the frame rate you decrease the motion blur and the video becomes more realistic. The downside is that some purists actually prefer the look of film over HFR as (HFR) is often comparable to Soap Opera Effect. It becomes more televisual than traditionally cinematic.

Reviews of Gemini Man have compared it to a nature documentary action thriller.

Some people like HFR some don't. I think there are some decent videos with regards to The Hobbit:

Awesome, thanks!! (and I have apparently been saying it wrong for the past 20+ years, which was maybe all of 3 times haha). Cliff's Notes just doesn't roll of the tongue as nicely...

I got super lucky, my primary theater is showing this in 3D 120fps (2K, though).

That was very interesting. Thanks again for sharing. I loved his one line about audiences seeing the Hobbit in 48 fps... "It was as if a hole was cut into the wall and people were looking into the real world." And that was how long ago? Wow.

How common is HFR nowadays? I remember hearing about it for Billy Lynn and now with Gemini Man. Is it becoming more common, or should I say more widely accessible and thus used by filmmakers? This is very cool!

Unfortunately, it kinda seems like Ang Lee is the only major filmmaker who has embraced it right now.

Is James Cameron planning on using it for his new Avatar movies? If there’s anyone who could push the tech successfully, it’d be him.

IIRC, what he was talking about doing for the sequels was having the hfr version change framerates depending on the scene. So the slower dramatic scenes would be 24 but the fast action would be 48 or 60 or 120.

No problem ….sleep deprived that day and rather impatient was I. And I agree with you that the local theatres showing the movie could provide more specific clarification as to the actual frame rate in their online showings.

I got to see this in 3D 120fps, and it was glorious. The movie itself was all right, nothing amazing, but it was a technical showcase, for sure. Seriously awesome stuff. The high framerate was so effective for the action sequences that I wish every action film was shot that way - it really did lend a level of clarity to the whole affair. I think I remember someone commenting that it looked as if the screen were a giant hole in the wall, and I'd like to echo that sentiment. Everything looked very real.

Speaking of things that looked very real, young Will Smith was definitely the most impressive CGI human I've seen yet - much better than Tarkin, for example. There was only really one scene where he looked totally off (
[Show spoiler]the scene at the university at the end had him looking super duper weird and uncanny, for some reason
), but other than that I would say it was 95% convincing most of the time and 100% convincing often. Really incredible stuff, and I applaud the team that worked on it.

Part of me hopes they add a 12-fps spec to 4K Blu-ray by the time this is released, but either way, I hope we at least get a 60fps version, because WOW.
