Now then... the reason I was absent here yesterday with a news update is that I spent part of the morning and early afternoon at Paramount Pictures getting an early preview of Ang Lee’s Gemini Man on 4K Ultra HD. The studio is going all-out on this title: Not only will it be only the second 4K UHD release to feature high frame rate 60fps (the other being Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk from Sony), it will be the first Dolby Vision title with 60fps. The 4K disc will also feature menus in 4K with HDR and 60fps, and a special feature with 4K, HDR and 60fps too.

At yesterday’s event, Paramount’s SVP of World Wide Product Production Ed Hoxsie—along with Jacqueline Gustafson (VP of Content and Production), Rachel Crang (VP of World Wide Product Production), and Jeremy Miller (Director of Worldwide DVD & BD Production and also the product manager on this title)—previewed 6 scenes from the new 4K disc, along with the 4K special feature (a VFX progression reel from Weta Digital).

Now, I have no opinion of the film itself as I haven’t seen it. But there’s little doubt that the disc, in terms of sheer A/V quality alone, is stunning. Not only is this title employing a 100 GB disc configuration, it features an average video bitrate of 84.25 Mpbs, with peaks as high as 95.75 Mbps! (By comparison, most 4K UHD titles are in the 35-60 Mbps range, whereas 4K streaming is typically around 20-25 Mbps.) And let me tell you, the combination of very high data rate plus 12-bit Dolby Vision results in a major bump in dimensionality, depth, and nuance in the image. The film’s Dolby Atmos mix is impressive too. But visually, this is just breathtaking. Now, it does have that “live” or “video” look imparted by high frame rate that you’re either going to love or hate. This film feels very much like a videogame in many of its action scenes. That issue aside, however, I have little doubt that Gemini Man is going to be a must-have title on 4K UHD, even if only as demo material for many home theater and 4K enthusiasts. And hey—it comes in Steelbook packaging too, which is a nice touch. We’ll be reviewing the title in the next few weeks here at The Bits, so be sure to check back for it.

I like the fact that they`re putting this much effort in a box office flop.
At least they`ll make some money through pysical media. Most studios
would just put out some half assed regular Bluray and call it a day.

Since LG E6 does not support Dolby Vision 60 FPS (DV 24 FPS is supported), will it just play HDR10 or could there be playback issues?

Been wondering this myself (as a 65E6 owner).

Box office shouldn't ever really influence the quality of the disc because they are already working on it before it even hits theaters. You can kind of see this when surprise hits come out with very little extras and bombs have more extras then you would expect.

Not to mention box office performance often doesn't guarantee a home video hit or miss.

Damn. That makes me wonder about the low latency Sony version too.

It's probably a matter of bandwidth. We should be ok.
Isn't Netflix DV 60fps?

Dolby already specified that DV at 50/60p should be MEL for UHD disc so it goes easier on the processing, it's strange that even with that restriction the 2016 OLEDs can't do it. So when the player is called upon to do *all* the heavy lifting, as low latency dictates, and I'm presuming that they don't have as much horsepower as what these TVs do, then it gives me pause.

I've got some 60p DV clips that only play in HDR10 from the OPPO into the ZD9, but then that may be because the DV profile is too recent so it ignores the extension data (players are profile dvhe.07 I think, the file I've got is profile dvhe.08 so that might explain it).

Is this movie worth a blind buy just for the picture quality and 60 fps, me being a fan of science fiction movies?

I'm buying it blind for all of those reasons. And more MEW on UHD is no bad thing.

This is what I’m saying. Geoff is only speaking to the 1% today.

Thought I might be the only one who didn't know what MEW was.

I was able to see the 120fps presentation, and I am getting the UHD because the presentation really is something else. It is worth picking up for the presentation alone, provided the UHD is a good representation of what I saw in the theater (60fps vs 120fps notwithstanding).

Just wanted to say that I am fully aware of MEW and I approve of more MEW in all films. Might just watch 10CL tonight, in fact.

Anyway, my recent attempt to rewatch Billy Lynn confirmed that I just can’t stomach HFR so I’m gonna pass on this. Not even the power of MEW can overcome my distaste for HFR.
