One last bit on price...

$30 or $35 + the $5 or so shipping... that's kind of rough.

BUT

I'll say this right here and now...

IF their titles were just $10 cheaper... $20-$25... I would drop every pricing argument even with the lack of extras and the limited print run. I also bet they would come closer to selling out more titles.

Heck, I'll take another half-step here... IF they went so far as $30 each BUT 2-for-$50... I could live with that.

Right now they get zero money from me... and while Fright Night is long gone now and we can't change the past... at 2-for-$50, there are at least 4 other not sold out movies I could see myself buying.

And I don't think I would be alone in that thinking.

Ordered mine! Looking forward to seeing the transfer on this one. I caught it in HD some months ago on cable and it looked pretty nice. Happy the Savini commentary is with.

SAE is just the distributor of the TT releases and TT determines the price for the releases.

Thumbs up

Just got the e-mail. There is officially 1 less copy available.

Somebody mentioned the theatrical run.... I have a bit of history on this flick, if you'll allow me a quick story. I remember it played at my local 5 theater cinema in Nowhere-ville, Mississippi. I was 10. My uncle (who was 17) used to take me to see all the R-rated horror flicks. This one particular night, the theater wouldn't let us into the showing. Change of policy, they said. They were saying, "You can get in because you're 17. But since he's not, he needs a guardian of 21." I can't remember what we ended up seeing, but I'll never forget the disappointment. It was bullsh_t. After the film, I recall the melancholy walk back by the poster on the way out of the mall. ~single tear~

Box office tells you a lot. To be dismissive of that implies you don't understand this. EDTV grossed 22, Lebowski 17million. That's a difference which means - guess what? - EDTV was more popular than Lebowski upon initial release. That's EXACTLY what that means. Leboswki has legs that EDTV doesn't. That's clear as well since their release.

FN's box office is 5x as large as NOTLD90's 25 to 5million. That's a large difference which I think we'll see when NOTLD prices don't hit the $160ish that FN is hitting in the secondary market.
Ok, take EVIL DEAD grossing a little over 2 Million vs . JAWS 3D 45 Million, Dead Zone 20 Million, the Entity

those are big Differences, and Evil Dead would Sell for the price of all those combined in a Limited Situation.

not saying NOTLD is anywhere near the cult following of Evil dead, big lebowski, or Office space.

but it's definitly on par, or just as well know than Fright Night.

It has to do with the the dedication of the fan base/cult status maybe?
That's not even debatable, since there are zombie cons, but not As Good as it Gets Cons (nor Fright Night cons for that matter).

I just don't think we'll see the FN prices (175) for NOTLD90. All I'm saying really, based on past #s.

You can't compare box office numbers at this point when deciding popularity. There's an entire generation of people who've likely seen this film over the years on cable, VHS rentals, DVD, etc. Fright Night as well. Once a film is on the open market it can become very popular -- both of these films have large cult followings but it's impossible to compare those numbers. All it means is that X amount of people paid to see each film "blind" in 1985 and in 1990.

Since then we've had home video rentals, netflix, instant downloads, etc. The audience that likely bought tickets for BOTH of these films at the time of release is 27 and 22 years older respectively. That's a whole crop of people who have sampled these films over the years. As many have stated, AGAIG made serious bank in theaters and can't sell units. The demographic for this film is unlikely the TT market. NOTLD'90 has the benefit of sharing the name as the original film, getting increased awareness from Zombie fans, Romero fans, etc.

Fright Night was released, made some money and faded fairly quickly into cult-status. I think it's safe to argue that fewer people know about it than do the NIGHT remake.

Donnie Darko? Nobody saw it in theaters. It grew popular on video. Night'90 had a similar success in that regard.

NOTLD90 became popular on home video and from regular play on cable channels over the years.

This makes me feel better. The only other time I'd ordered only 1 TT title, the package came with a damaged cover. I ordered only this title and was concerned what would happen if I received it and the cover was damaged again. I was even considering ordering a 2nd title and asking that it is shipped together to avoid a problem.

TNT aired it often as part of MONSTERVISION. I remember Joe Bob's marathons.

That's how I first saw it in like 1997-1998.

Fright Night never got much attention that way. I think Cinemax aired it once in a while but we didn't get the pay-channels. I remember a friend's dad owned a copy he taped from the late 80s on VHS that we watched. I eventually bought a copy on VHS from Suncoast. Then the DVD when that came out.

I know that I'm on 2 SAE email lists Tns49, and each inbox receives different types of messages. The throwaway addy I originally registered with gets all of SAE's promo and announcements, including low quantity notices; whereas the addy directly associated with payment gets only their order aknowledgments and shipping notices.

I think the last low quantity notice I received at the former address was for Journey to the Center of the Earth...I don't recall one at all for Mysterious Island. I first heard about that milestone here and via TT's FB wall. It was also posted on SAE's landing page in the "News" section, where I see it now reads "less than 400" for NOTLD90.

I guess what I'm saying Tns49, is I don't know if SAE is still e-mailing those "less than" noticies anymore...I haven't had one since Journey.

I don't really agree with this.

One thing that I like to do, to gauge the popularity of a film, is to check the number of votes on IMDb (this works better for older films, say pre-1995). Fright Night has about 23,000 votes, compared to about 17,000 for Night of the Living Dead '90. Obviously, it's not the end all and the be all--but it is a neat and generally accurate way to gauge popularity for certain films. And in this case, I agree with the numbers--Fright Night is a more popular film than Night of the Living Dead '90.

Also, factor in the overall user rating, if the numbers seem deceiving. Look at Troll 2--it has 16,000 votes, but its user rating is 2.5 vs 6.7 for NOTLD '90.

Of course many companies would have jumped to release movies like Fright Night and NOTLD90. Thats not really the issue. For me, the issue is TT needs some of these big titles to recoup the money that they are likely losing on the obscure titles.

So if you have to overpay a little for some of these cult horror films, it's completely worth it if we are also getting some of these obscure movies.
Exactly.

Very true. In the intereview, they make it very clear that they take a risk with most of their titles and that these guys don't exactly have a private yacht.
