The "cinema" mode trick actually worked surprisingly well. The blues and blacks that were previously a burden are replaced with a mild grey, and it's perfectly watchable. I didn't have any trouble seeing anything this time. Aside from the slightly hazy look, the detail is quite good.

Still, this is far from a ringing endorsement, especially given the price tag. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops to play one movie while the rest of your collection looks perfectly fine. I doubt I'll be ordering from Twilight Time again, but it is what it is I guess.

Me neither as you can see in the .gif file i made, but i have to be honest, that .gif turned out darker on my pc than on my tv

To me it's obvious. I live in a haunted house

Would have been nice to get an explanation for the botched audio.

Those caps were the first ones posted here and of course it began the firestorm of controversy. However they turned out to be very inaccurate and it exaggerated the "darkness" of the transfer to the point where everything was crushed in black.

The person who posted those caps was either trying to get a reaction of the members here (which he very much succeeded at) or his equipment is the worst calibrated device tech ever. Either way it has turned out not to matter and many members here now look like complete fools in going along and running with someone else's whim.

my picture and the caps look very similar (albeit mine a BIT less blue) and I have a professionally calibrated Panny 50 inch plasma

I have a calibrated Panny plasma as well and I did not experience that amount of darkness from the transfer at all. Even the now famous first 20 minutes of the transfer was detailed well and did not have a blue tint or whatever some have claimed to experience.

Is this transfer the definitive presentation of this film? No it is not but it isnt the train wreck it was claimed to be either.

Which caps are you referring to?

there were at least 6 different people that posted caps. All of them were too dark. Let's pretend the video is perfect. That still leaves the missing audio.

Not all of them.

Yes, some caps are different from others but people keep referring to specific caps but don't reference which ones they're talking about. Which introduces confusion into the discussion.

well, maybe it's because I'm running my Plasma AS the monitor too. so the screen caps and the video in motion are being played on the same device.. thus I don't see a "difference" between the caps and the actual video

In relation to the varying screen caps etc of NOTLD, i would recommend an ISF calibration or maybe Purchasing a meter and SW and going down the DIY route.
It really is money well spent.

PS
I think it might be an idea of the Forum had a list of ISF/THX certified calibrators willing to offer their services.

On my Firefox browser, those caps look hideously blue and nothing like what I saw on my calibrated plasma. My PC monitor is uncalibrated. We did get a poster earlier claiming that Firefox does something to the color profile and possibly changes the gamut.

Exactly! So these caps are not actual representations of the BD at all. These were the first caps I saw posted and I began to freak out since I did not have my copy yet but I was relieved when I finally did view it.

Look guys I'm not defending this transfer because it isn't true to its source but trying to mislead others is in my opinion wrong.

This here.

And those members who posted up those false over exaggerate screen caps above were the most boisterous as well. 2 of them admitted to not even having their equipment calibrated (I got the impression that they were pretty much using out of the box settings, or vivid mode), and used the argument that every other blu-ray has looked fine in their opinions on their equipment, so why doesn't this .

Me neither. Big revisionism not so well executed. So what if he likes it. It is not the film he made anymore in terms of coloring and night/day transitions. I didn't support George Lucas, or the French Connection guy ('tho at least they actually made the changes themselves), and this is no exception.

I'm interested in knowing how it is that you're more familiar with Savini's "original vision" than he seems to be. Do you live inside a past incarnation of his brain, endlessly looping his directorial intent circa 1990?

For what it's worth, I agree with Tom Savini. The BD looks fantastic. I didn't see the film theatrically, and I don't trust anyone's memory to stretch back more than five minutes without error...let alone more than 20 years. And previous home video releases are about as valid a standard as closing your eyes and having someone describe what the image should look like. So that leaves me with the word of the director and whether or not the look fits the mood of the film. And in both cases, the BD wins.

I'd typically agree with this sentiment, but this is clearly somewhat of an exception in that we're not talking a dispute over slight color push/brightness/contrast difference...we're talking previously-midday bright outdoor scenes that now look like dusk. It's a dramatic shift, the sort of major discrepancy I'd wager at least some people would be able to recall accurately from theatrical viewings, even from over 20 years ago.

I'm with the review on highdefdigest all the way. This disc makes a nonsense of the sunset, features "daylight" I've only seen the like of during a solar eclipse and is missing audio elements. Either Twilight Time didn't know about these issues, in which case they are incompetent, or they did in and went ahead anyway in which case they are cynically greedy. If this disc was an unlimited edition sold by Sony every copy would now be on its way back to the retailers and they would be besieged with complaints as in the case of The Fifth Element. I don't see why Twilight Time should be treated any differently, they are not your benefactors, they are a company out to make money like any other. Absolutely fine when they deliver, when they don't they have to take complaints as well as they accept praise when they get things right. I wonder how many of those praising the transfer have a few extra copies they're hoping to sell.
