It's not a mystery. Sony intended to use it for their own BD release. Why would they supply an updated remaster of something they were intending to sell as an exclusive Blu-ray edition? The plan was scrapped and they eventually passed it along to Twilight Time -- they fact that they haven't updated the HD versions to people paying to stream is likely an oversight because it wasn't a high priority film. It's not as though they could charge much more to license it out to stream. Those deals are typically done in bulk with a great amount of movies offered at a single rate -- regardless of quality of masters, etc.

I doubt anyone at Sony thought twice about supplying the new master because it was an "on hold" catalogue release until Twilight Time came around. They weren't going to use it anywhere but a BD release initially and that didn't end up happening.

Considering they used a different HD print (with the original coloration) for all of the streaming services and TV broadcasts, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony eventually releases their own disc once Twilight Time's exclusivity contract expires, which coincidentally will be right around the film's 25th anniversary.

I just got back from a surfing trip so you could say that I was under a rock for a month or so. Just decided to check what blus are released today and saw this one.

Currently back reading so I'm just learning about it now. I just hope they release this again, with better transfer of course.
