Yea I know! I just wanted to get rid of it. Was that before or after Amazon deducted their 15% commission? If it was after, you've only got $59.50 of the sale. 15 % is quite a bit, which is why I no longer sell on Amazon anymore.

Ugh, that sucks.

amazon has had 15% commission for years. but the $70 was before they took it out.

Which is strange because on Vudu (and I think Hulu), the HD transfer resembles the DVD. I paid the $5 to upgrade the DVD to the Vudu HDX (1080p) version.

it's an older master they used there. the VUDU and other HD channels don't have the new master yet from what I've gathered

You know I actually was able to watch this on a LG LED Projector. I turned down the blue color option to a full -50 and this movie looked much better to me. Aside from the blue this bluray has fine detail and sharpness and is not to much dnr. It really looks good aside from the whole color scheme. You can tell it looks great the first 4 minutes of the film.

I bought a new copy a few months ago from a fellow blu ray.com member for a very reasonable price. I finally got around to watching it and yep... It's blue lol. Some scenes look much worse the others but it's pretty distracting. Its a shame this didn't get a proper release but I have a feeling this is as good as it will get for a while. Maybe for my next viewing Ill mess with the color settings on my tv and try to make it look better

I altered the color settings/brightness a little and it looked fine to me.

I agree NOTLD is botched bad, but that has kept it cheap and I'm starting to warm to the new look with repeat viewings. We'll find out in 12 months when Fright Night's license runs out, but I'll lay fat bank there will be no legit Fright Night US re-issue until at least late 2015, if ever.
Pretty much this, I really hope SOMEONE re-releases this within a few months of TT's license expiring, but then again...

Interesting to see the prevailing comments, a year and a half later, are mostly negative. A lot of people were arguing for the blue tint when it first came out. My opinion remains the same: blue tint does not a day-for-night make, and Patricia Tallman is not a smurf! I'll hang on to it, because it's the best HD transfer on disc, but I'd still love to see this movie done right.

Agree with you 100%. Happy to have my TT NOTLD '90 but would happily buy this again without the strange color timing.

As for Fright Night and Christine... $50 is my limit for any one movie no matter how much I might like it. So, both are off limits to me now with what they fetch in the secondary market. My only hope is that they get some kind of future release even if it is another 3000 from TT (which I would be content with if I could snag a copy).

Again, it sucks to miss out on a TT title when it sells out; I can live with the pricing.

Heard from Frank Prinzi this morning:

Quote:
Thank you for your critique on The NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Blu-ray. It was quite accurate except for one important point. The color correction for the film is horrible in every sense but it was NOT supervised by me. You can imagine how I felt after seeing bits and pieces of the corrupted movie's images. Early notes were given by me but not followed and not supervised by me. I was heartbroken to see everybody's work massacred. So that’s the REAL STORY.

It might be smart to research what you write before you write it. You should know the business by now… you shouldn’t believe all you read. It would have been nice to contact me (as many did) before your wrote the review. Thank you for your interest in a very cool film and maybe you should go after anyone who really destroyed the film. Who the heck knows who that is.

Best to you always.

Frank Prinzi, ASC

I guess it finally closes all the pointless discussions about this BD release.

Thanks for this really useful post. The first one in this thread since ages

So glad that I bought this. It looks great on my shelf next to "Fright Night" and "Christine".
A good $30 investment IMO only.

The DP is certainly right to be angry if he's not satisfied.

I'm still with Savini though -- the blues might be slightly oppressive at times, but it still looks pretty terrific. And the DVD's brightness doesn't do much to create a spooky atmosphere.

What exactly did the DP expect the result to be as he was color grading over the telephone?

Well, he wasn't exactly invited over to do it hands on, so what could he do?

I consider the matter mostly settled with Prinzi's statement. Some unknown Sony technician went overboard with the new color correction and this is a flawed transfer that leaves the possibility open for a better transfer down the line.
