This was brought up before, somewhere between page 20 and 50 or so I'd guess but really proves the changes weren't as intended as some think they are. The first and last 5 minutes of the TT disc look amazing, the rest is just different shades of ****ed. For others who may have missed lots of this thread, the changes were literally phoned in by the DP and done by a non-skilled monkey. Phoned in is true, he said on twitter he talked to them (on the phone) about what they wanted to go for, so some tinting/dimming was requested, just nothing near what we got and certainly shouldn't have started so early (or been far more subtle early to make the sunset montage make sense). Were it monkey or man who did them has yet to be proven. ![]() |

Well happy day. I FINALLY added this movie to my Blu-ray collection. I picked up Umbrella's edition from Amazon for only $15, and it got here in less than 48 hours. The disc is awesome. Great transfer, great extras, and the rating sticker is the only indicator that it's a foreign release. This easily makes up for the years and years of trying to find a copy of TT's edition for a decent price, with it's inferior transfer and extras selection. This edition is definitely the way to go, and it's really easy to get now.

I just picked up the Umbrella release of this, it came in the mail today and I put it on to check it out. It looks great, I didn't really research it before hand, I knew people were not happy about the TT transfer but that's about it. I did a quick scan of the disc and it seems to look really good and a bit better than the TT disc, especially the color timing. I did notice that it has a slightly different framing. I currently have a friends version of the TT release and the Umbrella one seems zoomed in slightly and shifted a little to the left. Honestly if I didn't have both versions at my house to do a comparison I would have never noticed. Well worth the $15 and I can't wait to check out some of the special features.

The Umbrella disc has much better framing and the compositions look a lot more balanced because of it. The master TT used looks like a raw negative scan with no framing work done or proper color timing. Appears as if someone just applied a blue filter to the image and was done with it. Terrible presentation.

The Umbrella disc uses an older master, I think, but it still looks perfectly fine, and has the correct color-timing. It's also cheap and Region Free (despite what it says on the packaging), and can be purchased direct from the US Amazon. Definitely the way to go. Paying $50+ for a copy of the Twilight Time disc on ebay isn't remotely worth it.

I’ve always owned the TT edition and finally bought the Umbrella edition.
not thrilled with the color timing of the TT disc which let’s face it occurred at Sony because who was it the DP asked if they could darken it. Ok started watching the TT edition watched it up until it gets to night time. And they have the whole transition to nighttime so that darkening of the image that occurs previously is really a waste of time IMO Then I started watching the Umbrellla edition from the beginning. I kept thinking ok I like the brighter sunshine look however as I kept watching it I noticed something I never noticed with the TT edition. That is the Umbrella has a slight smear or texture on top of the image you can see it clearly with facial closeups and camera movements. It’s annoying .... I prefer the TT only because I don’t have to look at that strange smeary texture on top of the image. I didn’t mind the white speckles over the Umbrella but the TT even with the color timing the transfer is very impressive filmic look. Just my thoughts the Umbrella isn’t bad for the price I got a copy on amazon for about 14.99 new sealed thru prime. So it’s a good option for those who want to own a copy. sticking to the TT until a better edition ever gets released. |
