Besides, the remake is essentially a direct copy of the original... just modernized with more gore and whatnot.

what would really seal the deal for me if twilight time would put the 1968 version on the blu-ray disc since it is public domain i think if they did that it would probably sell out more quickly than the fright night blu-ray!

But that's more time and money, and they could honestly sell the 1968 version on its own and make twice as much money.

If you're not aware, they're are some decent releases by other publishers and/or studios out there. You can get the Forgotten Films release (again, the 1968 film) for around $20, although there's about 20-30 seconds of footage missing, although it's not a jarring cut in the least. The superior edition to buy right now though is the Japanese release by Happinet.

The credits say "Screenplay By George A. Romero," which to me, indicates a certain level of involvement with the script.

That's oversimplifying. The remake plays with the expectations of people who are familiar with the original. It subverts certain elements of the original to its own ends in order to surprise viewers who think they know what's going to happen.

Also, it's not particularly gory. It doesn't even feature intestines that I recall...the original does. Most of the gore got cut because the MPAA were really cracking down on violence in horror films in the early '90s. Hell, even Army of Darkness originally got an NC-17 before Sam Raimi cut it. And that movie's got an army of skeleton puppets in it.

Actually I think it differs from the original so much that is could be a stand-alone.

Just the cemetary scene is a direct copy.

Yeah... there are actually a lot of differences. Many are subtle and don't effect the overall outcome, while others directly change how the movie ends... but there are a lot of differences.

IMO the NOTLD remake is good, not great. I will be adding this to my collection but there is no way it surpasses the original. The tone of the original and the darker ending are so much better.

Actually, the cemetery scene isn't a direct copy.
[Show spoiler]In the remake, the first guy who wanders over isn't a zombie. If you've seen the original, you expect him to be. But he's a red herring, there to distract you just as the actual first zombie of the film pops in from the other side of the frame. And the "autopsy zombie" wasn't in the original film, either.

Agreed. While there are certain individual areas where I think the remake fares better than the original, overall, the original wins by virtue of its atmosphere and its ending.

There is a "HD" version available on the PSN network for 21.99 CND... wonder if this woud be a beter alternative if the bluray is just bare-bones? not sure if it's 720p or 1080p though?

I think the PSN version would be a last resort if the disc sells out. The thing that sucks about PSN videos is that you are only allowed to watch the videos associated with an account on one PS3. At 21.99, I think the better option would be to pay a little more and get the blu-ray that offers a lot more freedom and most likely better quality HD. The DVD looks pretty good upscaled, so I bet the picture quality on the blu-ray will be top notch & well worth it.

I am tempted but I still think I might pass on it. I had it on DVD and I watched the original black and white far more than I ever watched this...

Oh, me too, definitely. But, as a zombie/Savini/Romero buff, I have GOT to have this. At least one copy; likely several.

No, it has a different characterization for Barbra and the character fates are a changed too.

I have to agree. I'm a fan of zombie genre films but I watched this for the first time the other night from DVD and while it was a decent entry, it didn't leave an impression on me that it was a must own on BD title. I can pass on this.
