Glad you popped this YouTube video in.

It's where I am today: Waiting for the 65EF9500 flat OLED to arrive but also been considering going BIG, even though it is curved. The Samsung 78JS9500.

As per this video:

OLED=Judder
JS9500=not as black

Side viewing is not a problem with my wife and I. We sit directly in front of the set.

Since I do not have a dark room, maybe the difference in Blacks would not be noticeable when both sets are not beside each other but judder would be to me PLUS the 78JS9500 is a lot bigger than the 65" OLED

I keep going back and fourth and anxiously waiting the ShootOut which is this coming Wednesday & Thursday, 24th & 25th

Maybe/perhaps they can fix the judder by a sofware update. LG is aware of this.

A member on the AVS forum just mentioned that he has banding problems on his 78JS9500

Judder on the OLED which possible can be fixed
Banding on the JS9500, who knows?

You would think $9,000-$10,000 sets would have fixed problems that have plagued TV's for awhile

Jim, glad you posted this and almost as fast as you did I was able to confirm that the 65" and 55" EG9600 is absolutely not being discontinued.

That is the whole truth. I assume like with all high-end CE and appliance companies they have a buy-back policy when the customer is not likely to be satisfied with the product. And it's also important to see where you purchased the EG9600 from and they are looking at the transaction for several other reasons. So in the end all is fine and 4K OLED is here and we all read the wildly reported very nice yields and that is good for overall production, and supply will put just a little motivation on the price, hopefully we can all begin to enjoy the benefits of higher yields to trickle down to the consumer sales will surely follow.

Anyway the 55" and 65" EG9600 is not going away anytime soon and I'm sure not even before the normal model series of 1 year cycle.

4 days and 13 1/2 hrs. till VE's 2015 TV Shootout

The glow around an image, with a black background (See above video with Pioneer logo) causes the banding on the JS9500. Also on grey, green white, blue etc colors, you will notice. Well in fact it's there all the time.

I had an old LG also with local dimming. I will never ever want to use that technic again.

It's so horrible to watch. And you can't get used to it, trust me: avoid it.

When the difference in pure image quality between brands is fairly close, GO BIG, as a larger screen is commonly underappreciated in the grand scheme of home entertainment viewing enjoyment by consumer *videophiles*, who needlessly torture themselves over *deficiencies* that in the long run, they often become accustomed to anyway. If not, try Prozac…..unless you’re the type that enjoys being a video masochist.

Heck, with enough usage, even after the BEST calibration, all televisions/monitors drift from their optimal image quality over the course of time (which is why they are regularly (often) recalibrated in professional post houses whether they be plasmas, LCDs, or OLEDs) and the effect is so slow and subtle, unless you’re a digital colorist with an excellent recollection of how you graded the motion picture to look like initially (and then view it again after the drift), typical viewers aren’t cognizant of the deficiency because our eyes adapt to most anything (reread first sentence of this post), if we have to watch it day after day.

For those being honest with themselves, it’s much more difficult to adapt to a smaller TV, when in retrospect, you’d wished you had purchased a larger one from the get-go.

That is what I have concluded.

I wanted the best, OLED but BIG has been nipping at my heals.

I have come to the conclusion that even though the black is blacker with the OLED, the JS9500 series is so close that once in my home, I wouldn't notice a difference but BIG I sure would notice.

I do like your "Prozac" advise

Except the bigger the set, the more obvious its deficiencies will be especially if you have OCD tendencies. I don't see that as an excuse to get hooked on pharmaceuticals (I'm sure Pieter doesn't either). I downgraded from a 65" ZT60 that suffered from long-term IR (drifting color is another overrated issue altogether, I would have to agree) and drove me up the wall. At the time, there were only 55" OLEDs available (1st gen). In retrospect, it was a great decision for my peace of mind. Of course I'm itching to go big once again, but LCD is a line I'm still not ready to cross when blackout viewing is my favorite way to watch.

Some movies look ALMOST as good on my pro-101fd. But some look like crap. Maybe due to ABL or something.

I'm trying to sell my oled (EA9800) and two elites (111fd), but never find buyers still.

And how pathetic LG is still too lame to make good calibration controls and every single oled model ahs color accuracy issues. Sigh. I do have the numbers looking nearly perfect for grayscale and gamma, though. One mode with only the i1d3 and one with it profiled off of a i1 pro rev d.

I stopped by a Best Buy today and was asked if I had ever seen 3D on the OLED which I had not.

I was given a pair of 3D glasses and he turned on the LG 3D demo.

I was highly impressed plus it was really great and impressive

What about 2.0a HDMI ports for plugging 4k Blu-rays?

LG is quiet about HDMI 2.0a, probably waiting for UHD Alliance standard which should be announced soon. Samsung, Sony and Panasonic will provide an upgrade. This was mentioned during the afternoon shootout, but the information in this article is still current. ( see the last few paragraphs)

How can an upgrade be provided if the problem, is hardware, 2.0 vs 2.0a as in LG's OLED? They might be able to receive an upgrade for streaming only. If the flat OEDs coming out in August do not have HDMI ports with 2.0a and copy protection 2.2, I'm not getting an OLED

A couple days ago, I was told by a Sony rep that there is an firmware upgrading coming for HDR but the HDMI ports are all ready 2.0a.

Yes. Existing HDMI connectors will still be used."

Are sure? The Sony rep actually mentioned that the 940C had 2.0a HDMI ports

It is HDMI's specification. I take their word for it.

The question is whether the internal chip on the 2015 LG OLED's can handle the HDR metadata through HDMI. The fact that they aren't talking about it implies that they don't think it will. However, once the UHD Alliance sets a UHD standard, new LG's displays will have the right chip. So, for now, HDR will be available through IP interface only with an update.( See Archer's Forbes article dtd 5/20/2015)

It will all be good by the time Ultra HD Blu-ray players reach the market. I'm waiting until 2016, when I believe these issues will settle before I look seriously at buying an OLED. I hope I have a couple more brands to choose from by then. Say, Sony or Samsung for example.
