I doubt that there will ever be an 8K consumer optical disc. 8K Displays are currently available from Sharp for commercial applications. 8K broadcast is scheduled for 2018 in Japan.

OK, I've got to ask this again.... When does anyone here think that I'll be able to buy an OLED TV that's currently in the $4K to $5K price range for less than $2K (or 2 Grand, if you prefer)? Because, until I can get an OLED 4K TV that's just as good as what's now selling for $5,000 or more for less than $2 Grand, I am not getting one. So, when can I assume they'll be less than $2,000? 2017? 2018? When?

$2,000 on one because to spend more than that seems obscene to me, so for now it's just save, save, save. |

Are we likely to see multiple lines of OLED from LG in 2016? Looks like they have this Signature line coming out to be announced at CES. Maybe they will have a "high end" line and a more mid-level line in each variety of flat and curved?

Robert, thanks for the reply. I am all for 8K displays when they become available in the United States. Yes, 1080P Blu-ray’s can look excellent being upscaled to 4K as long as the upscaling is performed correctly. I was just reading awhile ago that on lower end displays(most likely some lower priced 4K LCD displays) that if the upscaling is poor, then native 1080P displays can look better when viewing native 1080P material. Some displays have better 4K upscaling then others. That might be one of the reasons OLED displays are higher in price, since they most likely use some of the better quality upscaling chips.
It looks like Japan will soon be experimenting with 8K broadcasts. In the United States we are still waiting on 4K broadcasts (Direct TV satellite service offers some 4K). The consumer electronics industry is just moving so fast. When native 8K content becomes a reality, I will be interested in 8K displays. The higher resolution displays always get released before the content becomes available. When several manufactories start making OLED’s in large quantities then prices will in theory come down more. Regarding availability of affordable (under $2,000) 65” UHD OLED displays. My prediction is mid 2017.
Look for Ink Jet printed panels from Samsung and possibly LG at CES 2016. This technology will reduce production costs by nearly 50%. Kateeva Ink Jet printers are now commercially available and have been installed at Samsung and/or LG recently. The LG WOLED process was just a stop gap measure while waiting for Ink Jet which will significantly improve panel yields and panel uniformity. http://news.oled-display.net/kateeva...lexible-oleds/ 2013 interview President and co-founder Kateeva: http://news.oled-display.net/kateeva...d-tv-displays/ |

The 77" from either of the prior two years has yet to dip below $20k SRP. It ought to be lower by year #3 if they are serious about gearing up manufacturing. Still, I'm betting the 77" will be a signature model by default and the only choice in that size.

I believe this is the huge TV I saw at a Magnolia a few weeks ago. Picture was simply stunning. Priced in the 20's. Which is a bit steep for me. TV was a real beauty though.

Was it curved? Fry's had the 2014 model prominently on display back in February along with the 65" model (showing some hideous burn-in at that, doubt they sold many at this particular location, especially with the 65" retailing at $10k). Both were a part of the EC9700/9800 series from 2014 (no HDR support and using outdated HDMI chipsets making even UHD Blu-ray support improbable). However, since you saw the TV more recently, maybe it was the now already discontinued model, the 77EG9700.
Only the most boutique stores (Magnolia, VE) seemed to get any allocation. So 2016 would be year #3 of selling at this size. There simply needs to be something (well) under $20k this time around if they intend to push any kind of volume, whether that includes the signature is another question altogether. I saw my first LG OLED display at my local BB the other day and it was jaw dropping but so was the price! When my Sony 55W900A burns itself out and can not be fixed OLED will be my next tv. But the prices will have to come down and it dont look like thats gonna happen soon but I am a patient man and I can wait. But I found and saw my W9's replacement and thats OLED and I wont settle for anything less. I just hope Sony join's the OLED game. Their foolish if they dont.

I know what that feels like. Glad I gave up waiting for that Pioneer 10th gen 0 mll Kuro.
![]() Lemme' guess, $6k? They were $5k up until this week signaling the end of the sale. At least stock levels will finally replenish before the next drop. Mine took 1-1/2 months to be delivered, and Best Buy was only happy to hold onto my money during that span. A deposit would have been more consumer-friendly. Anyway, I digress... At least Sony's not going down without a fight (that 940c holds it own against LG's OLED). Only way they can be remotely competitive with OLED is to rebrand an LGD panel. RGB OLED's not happening in the consumer TV market (anytime soon, if ever). |
