Thanks Deciazulado, beautifully explained and confirms my thinking.
@Mr. Joshua, I don't think the drawing was done yet. Should be soon. David Mackenzie just left our showroom after a full day looking at our 2016 Signature Series 4K OLED TV. We agree on the exceptional video performance of this new display. While viewing Gladiator BD we both agreed LG's OLED65G6P picture looks like the best HDR/WCG image quality we have ever seen, and guess what, it's of course, 1080p, rec. 709, SDR, 8-bit Blu-ray disc. Once we begin using the new digital perceptual quantisation, PQ to bring the display out of black more accurately to how our human visual system works we'll see more detail and gradation near black. PQ on a true 10-bit panel with HDR and WCG will deliver images like we have never seen before. Many folks have asked me to measure the input lag time and it's 33.7 ms in the "Game" mode. Another great day at Value Electronics for reviewing the advancement of digital display technology with this gorgeous bleeding edge OLED 4K display. -Robert |

Could you please explain what this means? What is the "new" digital perceptual quantization? Thanks.

I'll do my best to explain the new HDR digital standard for Perceptual Quantization, aka PQ, which replaces the gamma curve that was developed for the old analog CRT cameras and CRT displays.
PQ is a digital scheme that brings the display out of black up to its peak luminance much like the human visual system sees. We see best in low light so the PQ uses more bits with low APL scenes and more gradually moves out of black than areas with higher luminance. -Robert |

Thank you, Robert. What I was looking for is a more practical explanation rather than a definition. You stated "Once we begin using the new digital perceptual quantisation...." Does that mean it is not used by the OLED until you "begin" to use it? How do you "begin" to use it? Is that only for calibrators or can us ordinary folk do that? And how does this relate to the problem the 2015 models had in displaying near-black? Is that now greatly improved, or only improved if you "begin to use" PQ? Thank you for any further explanation, as this makes me very curious and wanting to know more.

Most 4K HDR capable TVs are PQ ready and the PQ is automatically enabled when you view any HDR content. PQ is not related to the near back issue and yes this has been greatly improved for 2016 and with proper settings the issue can be mitigated on 2015 TVs to be very minimal and will only show up in a very dark room with low APL images.
Professional calibration for HDR, WCG, 10-bit and PQ professional calibration is in development as we speak. -Robert |

visited Robert at Value Electronics yesterday. The new Signature OLED from LG is incredible. You owe it to yourself to stop in and see it for yourself. Always a pleasure to see Robert and his family. They are the best. The tv's in store are beautifully setup and the display content is a feast for the eyes. The Signature is not available to public yet so mark it on your calendar to make a trip up here to Scarsdale. You won't be disappointed.

Was going to go to the Shoot Out last year but it ended up not at V.E. So, I didn't go. It might not be at V.E this year but if it is, I will go. I have wanted to visit V.E. for years. I'll have to put it on my Bucket List . |

33.7 ms for LG's 2016 Signature Series G6. I don't know the input lag on the 2015 EF9500, but the 2016 not as fast response.
