We'll see. I'm sure they'll do market research on it. Big expensive box sets aren't exactly for "everyone" already. They're very specifically geared toward collectors and enthusiasts, which also happen to be some of the earliest adopters of 4K.

It wouldn't surprise me either way.

I have tickets for the 4K GOLDFINGER in July and will be looking to see if the Lowry-forcefields are still present in all their smeary glory.

Forgot they didn't do that

I saw the Lowry at 4k and it was the frozen grain that showed it up

The BBC/NHK transfer function was added to HEVC so there are now two different ways to encode HDR video in HEVC. Overall I think it is good to have the option to use a relative luminance HDR system and it will likely be used in the broadcast industry.

I think Movielabs gave a reasonable explanation for what can cause noise but it is directly related to the SMPTE 2084 transfer function due to the very large brightness range that it can cover (200 million to 1). So noise reduction is likely to be a component of working with SMPTE 2084 since it can have up to 3 bits of noise. Also while it would come with a higher cost Movielabs did provide some useful steps to deal with the noise (32-bit video processing and noise reduction).

I do too.

ITU (Andy Q.’s group) hopes to have a report out addressing the HDR broadcast imperative this summer.

Beyond that, live HDR (broadcast) will produce special challenges dealing with, for example, picture-in-picture applications and graphic overlays to ensure a comfortable viewing experience for consumers.

Also, another significant thing which will have to be considered eventually is how to *control* the advertisers, i.e. commercials. It would not be good form for the industry to repeat the situation that led to the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act (CALM) by inserting HDR enabled commercials which don’t abide by the parameters used with HDR programming itself.

As long as my mom can record five 4K shows at once, she'll be happy.

Geez, mike’s in the doghouse again! What did I miss? Something on a thread outside of the Tech forum again?

Geoff, to continue representing the U.K. contingent (b.t.w. England won yesterday in the WWC and if you check the Prem thread, I appreciate hairless legs), you’re going to have to take up the slack here until mike returns.

Well, back to the topic of 4K/UHD rather than the interpersonal drama. Hope to see both of them back after cooler heads prevail . If they think they have it tough, just think how the Republicans feel after this week.

Anyway, give me a few moments to find another worthy YouTube learning or entertainment clip at least for a diversion in the meantime….unless of course everyone has a burning desire for listening to me post about my admiration of the on-field sportsmanship and fair play of Women’s World Cup soccer compared to that of the Men’s game, which I still love, despite its comparative flaws.

Wish I was up there in your neck of the woods to either watch some of the World Cup matches or else compete in the http://www.bcbikerace.com/the-journey/the-stages/

I hadn't seen side bys but with regular HD demo's the same effect was happening when introducing people to 1080. So if this is similar in effect, yes I'd agree to show the best SDR first to the consumer.

One thing stood out for me was the backlight has to be increased in order for HDR to benefit. If so wouldn't that lessen the lifespan of the TV itself?

Mike's pretty much a marked man around here, if he gets into a ding-dong with someone (yes, there are other threads than the Tech forum, Penton ) he always gets hit with the ban hammer. Trouble is he can't turn off his, ah, straight talking manner so it's no wonder he attracts such attention. Ain't that right, mike?

My enthusiasm for UHD BD is diminishing rapidly though Mr P. I'm still fascinated by all the technical tidbits (as people may have gathered, I'm a fiend for tech stuff) but I won't be getting into UHD BD at the start, if at all.

Re: lifespan
With LCD (LED) technology, nobody’s really worrying.
With HDR and OLED displays, yes, there is already some concern , which could be exacerbated by a potential future nits/arms race

Hey, I occasionally get out of the Tech forum and venture further on down the page to Display Theory and Discussion, e.g. - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...s#post10974610

Well then when he comes back we just have to tie him down here in the 4K Movies Releases thread and force feed him a Penton lecture in vision science with regards to luminance and color or hue, e.g. the Bezold-Brücke effect, or display science like luminance-dependent sensitivity to flicker (Ferry-Porter law) and how this potentially could adversely affect viewing super bright HDR displays.

Hell, that would cure him (or anyone) of their online feistiness.

P.S.
On the other hand, just wondering, maybe mike is more cunning than we all presume and he intentionally pushes his luck with other members complaining to the mods because he already has a pre-planned absence anyway from Blu-ray.com in order to go work on a new project, go on holiday, etc.

Last edited by Penton-Man; 06-29-2015 at 04:53 PM. Reason: upon further reflection, added a P.S.

Why? Because of the speed of light and dark adaptation by our eyes.
