Penton-Man, can you tell us the maximum bitrate allowed for audio on Ultra hd blu-ray? I am wondering how many lossless tracks you could put on a movie. And I hope to get castillian audio tracks with lossless at least on Sony titles when they are finally announced in Spain.

One can have a conservative HDR grade, i.e. not make the imagery look too 'real', just more immersive to the audience viewing......
So, continuing on from yesterday ^, point is, whether it’s regarding greater spatial resolution with big sensor cameras or greater dynamic range with HDR pipelines, technology no longer needs to be the limiting factor governing the creativity of Directors and DPs.

With HDR encoding and finishing we are enabling them by giving them the power to use the full box of crayons (with even glitter if they want) and from there then they can choose whether or not, and how much to, truncate the imagery down as much as they desire with their particular story telling. They can still make the final outcome as fuzzy, clipped or washed out as they want, if that’s their artistic goal.

It’s like this, Gone Girl had a 6K DI ->5K DSM-> 4K DCP but it could have been much sharper (razor sharp) had David Fincher desired it to be; however, he didn’t. At least he had the choice.

Technology shouldn’t limit creators…..creators’ vision should be the determining factor as to what they desire audiences to see and how to see/hear it. Finally with the development and implementation of HDR and higher resolution acquisition, scientists and engineers are beginning to put ‘the power’ in the creators’ hands and minds.

So as not to offend our purely eye candy HDR aficionados, I should qualify that ^ assertion by saying that applies to non-cartoony, narrative productions rather than intended stylistic features like Mad Max: Fury Road or animation films for which the more HDR *wow* the better , as in this case even pushing up to 108 nits for certain effects in the theatrical DV encode…

^ that from a conference I attended in Pieter’s homeland, presented by and for professionals….

Not my field. I don’t know if that is defined in the specs for Ultra HD Blu-ray. Good question for PeterTHX or BD Authoring and compression Insider 2themax.

I do know of the spec defining the eight types of primary audio streams…

Save the forum? Seems like I'm alienating more and more of the 4K participants just because I've got the temerity to speak about a format which I've currently yet to get my hands on. I think I'll buy a player just to give the snidey shit-stirrers one less reason to moan about my moaning. Then I'll have to start my own 'SDR UHD support group' thread.

kristoffer: As for 100GB discs it still seems like they're not yet ready for prime time. The BDA had huge concerns over the viability of TL lines back in 2014, but you'd have to ask a proper insider as to whether the situation has changed. Penton, it's over to you...

That's what the ignore list is for, bro. Sometimes I can't help but peek at what they're saying, and then I realise exactly why I put them on ignore in the first place.

Hi.

My name is Doctorossi and I'm a cinema-graded-as-the-filmmakers-intended-oholic. I have 14 days on HDR.

There's no maximum bitrate for all audio tracks. Individually though they do have maximums. A playlist can have up to 32 tracks so no reason there can't be multiple lossless tracks other than space and taking away from the maximum video bitrate.

Good job he doesn't come from my part of the woods Penton Man. We all have cloudy vision here. With spots of rain!

Yeah, pretty nifty how I worked in the vision science with the player from L.C. wasn’t it? Spur of the moment thing. Man, u know I often think of HDR as a stadium of light given its arsenal of luminance. Expect future HDR animation flicks to be a glowing crystal palace.
