100% worth the 10-year wait (longer if you count the OT and disregard the prequels
![]() Had sooooooo much fun experiencing this new story with characters of old and new, and my god, did J.J. Abrams ever deliver. Disney/Lucasfilm put Episode VII in the right hands with J.J., and I couldn't be happier. Were there some minor nitpicks I had with the story? Sure, but not many great films can recover from them the way that The Force Awakens did, and on a consistent basis. Everyone in the theater cheered, laughed, roared, gasped, and cried all at the appropriate times without being snobbish or disrespectful. It was easily the best IMAX experience I've ever encountered, and the 3D was actually quite amazing and worth the extra bump up in price. One of this film's strengths that I loved besides it's focus on development for the new characters was the humor constantly throughout. It has arguably the most comedic bits of any Star Wars entry, but have no fear when I tell you, all of it works, and none of the jokes are cringeworthy whatsoever. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many occasions laughs spread throughout the theater. In my eyes, that only made the film greater and gave it some personality. As for the characters you know and love, and the characters that are introduced that you will be sure to know and love, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a magnificent return to form for the franchise, and you might as well hand Disney your money for Episode 8 immediately following your screening, because this franchise is only going forward with full speed, hyperdrive stye. 4.5/5, rounded up to 5/5 for the poll. |

It's so weird seeing a new Star Wars film and not totally loving it. It's generally what I expected - a retread or greatest hits film recounting highlights of previous films in a scattershot fashion. I had hoped beyond hope for more, but from the first frame it's clear that Lucas' knack for storytelling is nowhere to be seen. The film often feels clumsy and unsure of what it wants to do. My expectations were relatively low to begin with, so it's not a matter of my hopes being too high. It's not a bad film by any stretch and it is largely entertaining. It serves its purpose as an entry point to the series for younger viewers, but leaves something to be desired for those who already saw this film decades ago.
There are highlights to be sure. Kylo Ren was the thing I was most worried about, but he might have been my favorite part of the film. Rey was lovely and Ridley nailed the part. I thought Carrie Fisher was great again as Leia and the same goes for Ford as Han Solo. The years seem to have vanished the moment they are on-screen. I felt like the Starkiller Base (Death Star) was just completely unnecessary and felt like a last minute addition that serves little to no purpose. The film never quite finds its own voice and tries to be too many things to too many people. The singular voice that drove this series is gone, retired, and in its place is a boardroom full of executives checking boxes. The friends I went with felt similarly. I will say though that it does set up much for the sequels, where I feel the real meat the story will be seen, hopefully. I don't really believe in ratings, so I will refrain from voting. Need to see it again, but I'm not gonna oversell it too quickly like so many did for Episode I, although that one should never be compared to this awesome Episode VII.
ESB > ANH > RotJ > TFA > Everything else With a 2nd viewing, I could place TFA above RotJ at least. |

Best new character of the movie for me was
[Show spoiler] . Frankly the mystery behind who/what he is has been the most exciting part of the lead-up to TFA, and the movie didn't disappoint. Everything else about the movie is relatively easy to guess or at least surmise, but [Show spoiler] is a total blank slate and he's all the more fascinating for it. I wanted so bad for him to be [Show spoiler] , but I realize now that Abrams and Kasdan did the right thing to make him a completely new (I think) character. Can not WAIT to see more of him in VIII and IX.
