In a sense we did but at the same time it probably would've been very different.

In fairness the Jedi were virtually extinct in the OT so lightsaber fights would've been rare.

That isn't the case with the Jedi in the PT.

I love the prequels but stuff like hundreds of Jedi battling together was overkill. I'm hoping for more combat styles as shown in the Jedi Academy video game series.

I'd love to see a Homeland-type spin-off within the Star Wars universe. This has been done in a few episodes in The Clone Wars but I'd love a darker atmosphere like in Republic Commando.

I'd love more lightsaber fights that are like the Darth Maul Naboo duel in TPM.

For all the movie's flaws, that lightsaber fight might just be the best in the entire saga.

Then again the Obi Wan vs. Anakin duel in ROTS is great as well.

It's hard to choose between the two.

Attack of the Clones - Genonosis arena battle. Poorly executed by the Jedi. Dumping one Jedi every other staircase and a bunch in the middle of the arena was a bad idea. OBVIIOUSLY.

Should have swooped down with the gunships, picked up Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padame and then left. The Jedi loss would have be minimal compared to losing at least 100 or more.

They still could have track Dooku. And speaking of that...Dooku's ship flying into Coruscant. WTF? No one saw that? His ship should have been placed on a list and the Republic should have been watching it's space lanes for it.

Yes.

Would like to see that! Great idea.

You missed the part where Yoda and the Jedi split up. They didn't have the gunships yet. They were trying to protect Obi-wan et al. until the troops arrived. They were also totally blindsided by the number of droids in production. They figured they would show up, put down whatever political resistance was forming, and be home by dinner. Dooku caught them completely by surprise.

Can' t argue much about Dooku's ship, but it was small enough, and Coruscant was busy enough, that I can suspend my disbelief. It's not like Yoda threw a tracking device on it, and the Rebel armada was able to escape Hoth without being followed.

Now if the Lightsaber fight scenes in the new trilogy are just the like the UOT fight scenes than we are in for some good times.
However if they continue with the CGI animated back flip, and phony moves crap than it will be the PT all over again.

This is how the fight scenes should be for the new trilogy.

No.

They were over-choreographed dance set pieces disguised as lightsaber duels. Especially in TPM. Hopefully the new trilogy follows the OT's style of characters that actually look like they're trying to hit each other, not swinging lightsabers over each other's head while doing flips and spin kicks.

Ok I'll take back that statement.

I'll admit that saying that they're the best fights in the entire saga is hyperbole but they're still pretty cool even if they do overdo the flips and spin kicks.

Btw here's a lightsaber duel instruction video.

Yeah, an older guy in a bulky suit vs. an inexperienced person lumbering at each other.

PS: Luke did do some backflips.

Those fights were all about emotion. Rage, fear, aggression, etc. Not some fancy ballet stuff.

We have yet to see the ultimate lightsaber battle in the movies. The trick is to be awesome in choreography, but not actually look choreographed. It has to be a realistic yet unique sword fighting style that is both beautiful and deadly. I'm sure J.J. Abrams, with the way training is done for movies today, will up the ante when it comes to lightsaber duels. The question is whether we'll actually get to see much of it on screen (insert lens flair joke here ).

I'd love the to see another duel like in ESB. It was absolutely terrifying and almost felt like a horror movie when I was a kid. I think the AOTC lightsaber fight could've easily rivaled the Maul one had it not been cut in the editing room.

I love the ROTS battle but I think it would've been better if Mustafar was an uninhabited planet meaning the fight would have taken place on hills, ridges and extremely loose soil. Something like on the cover of Galactic Battlegrounds. The terrain giving away would've been better than the metallic structures collapsing imo.

This is how the fight scenes should be for the new trilogy.

I love those fights but the one thing that always bothered me was why [it]that[/i] much force is required for every strike. A lightsaber's impact doesn't depend on its velocity like a regular sword. Fluid motions from the PT combined with the striking motions from the OT would be my preference. Furthermore, I want to see dual saber combat. The multiple lightsaber fights have always been kinda cop-outs in the prequels:
1)Obi-Wan destroys one half of Maul's Saber.
2)Anakin's second saber is destroyed.
3)Grievous's arms are cut off.

I love both styles of lightsaber battles because they're so different. It's always made sense to me that the Jedi were so badass with a blade because they were honing their teachings over thousands of years, and because they're not heavy weapons like our swords of olde it also makes sense that they'd be able to incorporate such fluid and dynamic moves into the fights. Does obi-wan not call them an "elegant weapon"? The 'glorified dance routines' of the prequels are breathtaking examples of swordplay and obi-wan vs darth maul still makes my jaw drop, but they generally lack the emotional content of the OT duels, so what the OT loses in terms of balletic grace it makes up for it with sheer emotional intensity.

Peter is right though, Luke DOES still have some pretty nifty moves himself, like in Empire when he shoots up out of the carbon freeze chamber, does a backflip then pulls his 'saber towards him to block Vader's strike which he already knows is coming. If JJ can combine the emotional content of the OT with the style of the PT then I'll be one very happy camper. And, like srinivas, I'd love to see some proper multi-sabered duels too.

Yes. Your point is well said.

Maybe they could have surrendered till the troops arrived? or kept Dooku talking long enough till they showed up?

What is done is done. Let's hope Luke and the new Jedi learn from those mistakes.

The stunts performed in the OT where actual stunt work done by stuntmen.
There was no cgi fake stick figure moves like in the PT.

I think TPM and ROTS have the best lightsaber fights by far.

Duel of the Fates, Anakin v Dooku and Obi Wan v Anakin in ROTS.
