I believe there was some sort of Lucasfilm 'clarification' that the EU is not canon (ie gospel). As for how that impacts films going forward I would think that simply means new films would not be bound by events in the EU but I don't think they're necessarily precluded from lifting ideas, storylines or characters. I mean, I'm sure they would have to work out rights to whatever ideas they used but I don't think anybody has definitively said that (for example) Thawn is off limits.

But who knows.

The EU stuff was NEVER canon. It has always been essentially authorized fan fiction. If I recall, the exceptions supposedly being Shadows of the Empire, Clone Wars, and I believe the forthcoming Rebels cartoons and novels.

Shadows of the Empire has officially been retconned as well.

The only Canon stuff so far are the two cartoons you mentioned and the movies. All the new novels and comics coming out will be part of the new canon as well.

so sad, most of the EU stuff was light years better than what lucas has done with Clone wars and the PT.

As it stands now...

The Official Star Wars Canon is:

- Movies/Television -
  • Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace
  • Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars
  • Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
  • Star Wars: Rebels
  • Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope
  • Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
  • Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
  • Star Wars: Episode VII: ?

- Books (published after April 2014) -
  • Star Wars: A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller
  • Star Wars: Tarkin by James Luceno
  • Star Wars: Heir to the Jedi by Kevin Hearne
  • Star Wars: Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp

Everything else that was part of the original Expanded Universe is now considered non-canon under the Legends banner.

It's still unknown whether the upcoming comics Marvel are publishing will be canon or not.

Speaking of The Clone Wars, I'm mid-way through season five right now and a heap o' thanks to everybody who talked me into giving it a shot.

It's been pretty damn fun.

I just got done rewatching Season 5 --- Great stuff!

On to Season 6 soon. I have them downloaded, but I still haven't watched them. I really hope we get a blu-ray set released.

They will be. It was clarified when the initial titles and creative teams were announced.

I don't see why they couldn't keep the Old Republic part of the EU canon (Great Hyperspace War, Exar Kun, KOTOR etc etc), most of that doesn't really interfere with the saga's timeline.

They're bringing out a new edition of the Costumes book, a Storyboard book and hopefully a few others. I've always wanted the original Art Of books, I have 2 copies of A New Hope edition but haven't managed to get Empire's or Jedi's versions.

They probably think the same thing I do -- More than 3,500 years before the events in the Star Wars films, and civilization and technology hasn't changed much at all!?! Things certainly evolve a lot slower in a galaxy far far away.

It's a great show and the final season has a lot of relevance to Episode III

I think they do that so it steel feels like it fits within the SW universe to the fans, though when you go beyond 5000+ BBY they have showed more primitive versions of tech (lightsabers, ships and some comics do give off a different aesthetic with ships and costumes). I like the idea that the history of the Republic can go back over 15,000 years.

I think Lucasfilm should have released a statement something like, We at Lucasfilm would like to thank all the fans for spending countless millions on EU merch all these years but you know, suck it.

Movies delve into past events, why limit them? Why limit the main storyline to events that fringe writers produced?

I've got all of 'em, I had no idea that Empire and Jedi were scarce. But I look forward to adding The Art of Episode VII to them in due course.

Probably because they plan on actually making movies for KOTOR and such Disney plans to expand the universe immensely.
