All the other duels in I-VI were just lit like normal scenes; the blades themselves never cast any light on the actors… EXCEPT for the one duel in Clones with Anakin vs. Dooku. I think they lit those from off camera with moving (handheld?) lights colored with gels.

Wait a minute, you mean the actors aren't using real lightsabers in the original 6 Star Wars films? Just more FX nonsense by Lucas?

Definitely, never thought this movie would happen and pretty much gave up hope after the prequels. Many things about this movie make me feel old but I'm sure when the scroll rolls those feelings from my childhood will rush back in.

Apparently George Lucas has seen Episode VII and "really liked it".

Encouraging news as far as I'm concerned, though I guess it might worry others!

Despite what people may think about the prequels and the special edition OT, I would be concerned if Lucas wasn't happy or satisfied with TFA. So it's encouraging indeed.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but doesn't he sort HAVE TO say that?

As a mark of respect, yes, but he's not under any legal obligation to praise a movie that he had no direct involvement in. I'm sure judging by his past comments that he would have preferred the movie done his way, but it's comforting to see he said he enjoyed it even though it may not have been said with absolute sincerity.

Hearing an approval or disapproval from Lucas is absolutely meaningless. He obviously liked his prequels and he liked the changes he made to hurt the originals. So him "liking" it is not really good or bad news to us.

Oh, I know that he has no obligation to do so. But it's difficult to judge someone's opinion when he is talking about what is essentially "his baby." That's all I meant.

But you're right: He had no real connection to this, so ...

Anyways, like I said, I wasn't trying to be jerk. And thanks for your response.

This is kind of my biggest fear - that Kasdan and Abrams aren't interested in furthering the mythology and only concerned with making a "fun" movie that simply retreads the parts of the story that they like and not the whole saga and stuff we've seen before and comes off more l like a "greatest hits" album than a newly created one. Hoping against hope.

Steely, I could be wrong but I seem to remember that that duel in Clones was lit in much the same way as the "new technology" for Awakens, e.g. For some shots the actors were actually wielding the coloured lighting as if they were 'sabers to get that wonderful dynamic interaction with the light.

He did that with Star Trek and it worked. Well maybe not as much in the case of Into Darkness.

I don't think it worked at all. Those movies are hideous and incompetent.

Don't have to hope against hope. It continues the story of the Skywalker clan, it isn't going to be, you know, 'splosions and pew pew pew for over two hours.

What are you even talking about? That was a big article, none of which stated they "don't care about the story, and just want it to be fun".

True, but I still have concerns regarding what he says in the interview.

The Prequels occupy a complicated place in the "Star Wars" canon. Obviously, they were Lucas' vision and there's a whole generation for whom they were the entry point to the "Star Wars" universe, but a lot of older fans felt like they were a huge letdown. How do you think about them in terms of their place in the overall story?

The story [in the prequels] does not interfere. We only have to deal with the first trilogy so we didn't have to deal with it much. They obviously have a certain feel, and that was not the feel we wanted this one to have. This is much more related to "A New Hope" and "Empire."

[Pauses] The thing I always loved about "Star Wars" — and George had this when he made "A New Hope" and J.J. can hook into this very strongly — is that it's goofy, you know? There are big issues and there's some philosophy, but it's basically goofy. And I think "The Force Awakens" is goofy — in the best way. Wherever there's a question: Could that happen? Well, why not?

And with the canon — everyone refers to the canon, but it has zero meaning to me. I don't know what the canon is. I cannot get that straight.
Basically, he has no concern for how it fits into the larger story of the series, which is a big pile of poodoo for me.
