Meh, I only care for the BVS, and Civil War trailers. Seen Deadpool and Jungle Book plenty of times on the big screen.

The only reason why the industry cares about opening weekends is because it's a good predictor of overall performance for most of today's films that do most of their box-office the first week. Star Wars won't be like that - it's going to do great business for a month. Other than that, it's completely meaningless - the only thing that matters is cumulative box-office. Records are nice, but the studio is not going to care about the first weekend if the film does really well overall. And considering advance sales, it's almost impossible for it not to.

One thing working against Star Wars (from what I've read) is that the series is not all that well known in China. And China is now the biggest market outside the U.S. I'm actually surprised the studio didn't force J.J. to cast some Chinese actors.

I agree that many people (including myself) will wait until the crowds die down. Assuming the reviews are at least decent, I plan to see it in January after the kids are back in school. But that's why the the opening weekend won't mean that much.

There are still Asian participants though Zoet (the Raid fellas), sometimes that's enough to appeal to that market sector, and you can be damned sure the Chinese will be excited about seeing Donnie Yen in Rogue One. As will I.

Technically, he'd be committing a copyright violation against his own former company.

Furthermore, the Emperor laughed at him when he said, "you killed her". Why did he stay and follow the Emperor? You'd think that as soon as he got the chance, he would have used the power of the Dark Side to attempt to kill him, even if he would have failed because the Emperor has more power.

I'm not a Lucas basher, but the failures in logic at the end of the PT is one of the many reasons why he was so criticized and that last film was probably the best of the PT.

Now let's say instead she lived and went into hiding with the kids. Vader would know, now that he's mostly mechanical and lives behind a helmet, that he could never get her back, but he could be totally assured that he made the right decision by going to the Dark Side. It also doesn't screw up his line, "Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me" in the OT. This would give him the internal strength to become the badass that he becomes.

I happened to see "Trumbo" today about the blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo, who wrote Spartacus and Roman Holiday, among many other films. He died in 1976, but it made me wonder what Star Wars would have been like if someone like him had written the screenplay, especially the PT.

What I'm getting across is people are going to sit wherever they see seats available even if their ticket says something different. I guess that's just because of the people in my area where I live don't respect others.
And you politely say (showing your ticket), "Sorry, I think you're in my seat" (unless their assigned seat is better than your assigned seat). Only a complete jerk would refuse to move. But I wouldn't let them get away with it even if it means getting a manager in there. Reserved seats are reserved seats. Five minutes after the movie starts, all bets are off and one can take any seat they like, although since I always sit in the middle, if there are people around me, I wouldn't get up and disturb them.

Not sure where you see the illogic since it was established by Yoda in the OT (The Empire Strikes Back, repeated in Return of the Jedi)

"Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will."

Anakin was too far gone at that point (why do so many abused spouses stay with their abusers?). The rule of two still applied, and post Mustafar Vader was far too weak to challenge Palpatine. He'd lost everything and everyone. Where else was he to go? Once he got stronger, and found Luke, he was all too willing to dispose of his former master and assume power.

Would you guys rank the hype of The Force Awakens bigger or smaller than the build up for The Phantom Meance? TPM was the first Star Wars films in 16 years, where as TFA is the first in 10 years, George Lucus made a long awaited return (with creditably still in tact) for TPM, where as for TFA its the main icon cast members that make their come back 32 years between drinks..

But they did talk about how they used new lighting technology for the practical lightsabers on set, so the actors could actually be lit by the glowing blades. Pretty cool.

The most surprising thing about this issue (to me) was the opening "Wide Angle" column, written by Executive Editor David Geffner. This column is meant to be an introduction of sorts, to all the articles contained within. So of course he starts off by talking about the cover story on TFA. The similar magazine American Cinematographer has the same sort of introductory column, and I'll tell ya… I've been reading both of these magazines since I was in high school (wayyyy back in the late 80's), and in all that time I've never seen a single one of these opening columns editorialize or pass judgment on any movie. No matter what crazy terrible films the magazine has covered, they've never (to my knowledge) printed any opinions on whether those films are "good" or "bad". But in this issue's opening column, the Executive Editor actually states: "On December 18th... the lights will go down in theaters of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which, if you're a Star Wars lover (and had to suffer through the last three "prequels"), really deserves to be subtitled 'A New Hope' for so many reasons."

I actually LOL'd. As contributors to forums such as this, we may think this statement isn't a big deal. After all, the internet is all about asserting opinions as if they're fact. But ICG Magazine (and American Cinematographer) are the film industry's equivalent of medical journals. It's pretty surprising to find that sort of clear-cut admission -- and condemnation -- by the Executive Editor.
http://www.icgmagazine.com/web/far-and-away/

I wrote most of the article (not the ILM stuff, their main PR guy has shut me out since 2009) and I gotta say, you're right about the 'just the facts' approach with these kinds of mags (I've been reading AC since the mid70s myself, and spent a decade writing freelance and then on-staff at CINEFEX, which was seriously 'just the facts' -- even getting a couple of jokes into the text was always tough.)

I'm guessing Geffner figures the popular view of the prequels as sucking is so omnipresent that it can be considered conventional wisdom, and as such would be fair game. Sort of the way talking about the TREK movie Shatner directed is generally perceived (though that remains my in my top three because it really FEELS like the series and focuses on the big 3.)

Shoot. I thought there would be a book on that list with a story covering the life of Darth Trump, who's trying to slay evil politically correctness throughout the galaxy, while trying to keep his evil overcomb together with the help of midichlorians.

I wonder how long it will be until fans complain about this movie being "terrible" and "overrated." It's going to happen regardless.

That seems to be a trend with BIG blockbuster films. After the hype ended for Titanic, The Dark Knight, Avatar, The Avengers, Jurassic World, etc everyone whined about them sucking.

I was in Barnes and Noble tonight and they have a Star Wars table display set up with books, magazines, bobble heads, legos, etc. So I was paging through a Star Wars magazine when two women (50ish) stroll over to the table. The one says to the other " I'm not into Star Wars" to which the other replied "You don't have to be...you're not a nerd." Then the other one says where's the "Harry Potter section?" I was on the floor laughing my @ss off
