One other thing I forgot that was edited into the Battle of Yavin in post-production. Ben's line to Luke after he blows up the Death Star. "Remember, the Force will be with you. Always." was never scripted and actually had to be put together from 3 separate lines by Guinness since he was unavailable to dub it in.

Yep. We see shots of the map, but none of the actors ever comment on it. Leia doesn't mention the countdown. Luke and the rest of the pilots never reference it. Tarkin and Vader don't talk about it. That was all done through editing and dubbing in additional lines. Originally, the Death Star was approaching Yavin, but it was never about to blow up the planet before Luke fired those torpedoes in the nick of time.

I view this site entirely on my iPhone. I can't click that stuff, vote on polls, or see stuff in spoiler tags if it's the first post of a new page.

We never hear Leia or anyone else on Yavin referencing the countdown to destruction. We only see it on that round screen(or whatever that thing is) that they're looking at. The entire "Rebellion must destroy the Death Star before they're destroyed" aspect of the Battle of Yavin was done in post-production. It's amazing when you go back and watch it again knowing this.
As someone who's read every single screenplay draft for the original Star Wars, I have no real idea where you're getting all this.

It's been discussed in several books and commentaries. It's mentioned by Lucas himself in the 2004 DVD commentary. Skip ahead to the part right after Tarkin's "Evacuate now?!" line. Lucas describes in detail what they did in post-production.

I cannot focus on work if I keep coming back in here.

I have tickets for Saturday with the fam. But I might sneak a midnight viewing before then.

So...Luke trying to convince Han to join the fight, telling him what everyone is up against...that was all cobbled together from unused takes?

Yeah, I'm calling bullpoop. And because I'm stuck at home with a foot injury, going to go fire up that 2004 commentary track.

But the whole stakes of the movie are the Death Star Plans inside of R2 which tell the rebels how to blow it up...

No, that wasn't unused takes. Luke was talking about going up against the Empire and its mammoth space station that could blow up planets. He never said anything about Yavin being at risk of getting destroyed. Lucas and Hirsch added the countdown to increase tension and up the stakes after they'd finished principal photography.

Yeah, so the Empire didn't give a poop anymore about finding the Rebel Base, after they put a tracking device on the Falcon and let everyone go, when finding the rebel base has been their sole focus for the entire movie?

Again...bullpoop. Moooo. *splat!*

I think you're missing the point. I didn't say the Empire didn't want to follow the rebels to Yavin. I'm saying the actual countdown where the Death Star is about to destroy the planet before Luke saves the day was not originally scripted. That was what they added in post-production. The Empire was always tracking them to the planet.

Like I said, fire up the commentary and hear it from Lucas himself.

Wouldn't be the first time a film uses previously cut together material to create a new sequence.

Or the last time.

TF3 used a previous effect sequence from the Island to patch two shots together, because a near fatal accident where a paid driver was struck in the head by debris was in the original shot.
