Yeah, I can't really think of anything that stood out in the score, aside from the reprisal of Leia's theme, the Imperial March, and so on. I'll have the CD tomorrow to give it a listen though.

I think the score was just overwhelmed in certain places. I am buying the soundtrack this weekend so that I can give it a proper listen. I will reserve my judgement on the score until then.

But it was certainly an unusual choice, usually the music is at the front and centre of Star Wars, but in the case of this particular installment I agree with you.

Funny no music stood out in the prequels except Duel of the Fates. Everything else was blah and not up to the standards we came to know in love most of Williams work.

Loved the fact that Abrams wasted little to no time to
[Show spoiler]get his lens flare game on
, though it wasn't as prominent as his previous films, unless I missed something.

He is a self confessed lens flare addict. He has admitted as much. But he is trying to reduce the amount that he uses in his films. His wife even attacked him for his overzealous use. Addiction can take a long time to break.

Definitely a letdown. I kinda wish they'd bring in someone else. Williams is a legend, but he hasn't done a great score in a long time.

Say what you will about the Prequels but their soundtrack were great. It did like most of the score on Jakku for this one though. The soundtrack didn't take away from the movie at all to me though. Still great.

I liked Across the Stars even though it sounded like a reworking of the music from Hook. The prequels did have some pretty good scores which were unfortunately butchered by horrible editing, especially in the first two.

4/5 on my first viewing. Had its flaws but need to see it again to really flesh out my full opinion on things.

Although I hate that there's basically a 3rd Death Star in the movie i really didnt feel like it's a rehash of Episode IV because the characters are so different and they drive the story. The chemistry is amazing. Rey might just be in my top 5 Star Wars characters of all time.

As a big non-supporter of the prequels, Ive got to say that Williams' score for those films were phenomenal. Even after Phantom Menace released many years ago, Duel of the Fates is constantly in my head. The score was good in The Force Awakens but nothing memorable. I really wish they recycled the prequel songs into the new Star Wars films. I dont see what the big deal would be.

Based on the responses so far, the fans just like things being blown up.

What made Star Wars special in the past was that it was fun for kids but had a great story underneath that was timeless. That timeless piece was gone here.

Plus, putting back together The Republic, having Luke train a new group of Jedi.... And just glancing over these details were horrible story telling.
This is the best story in the series since Empire.

In all fairness, the timeless story took 6 films to deliver. If you were to compare just this film against A New Hope it has as much story if not more. My friend had similar complaint about how there wasn't much backstory for many of the characters in this film but if you think back to A New Hope, you knew nothing about Vader at the end of it and that was a standalone film that wasn't even guaranteed a sequel at the time. At least this film has 2 more sequels which is plenty of time to flesh out the characters and add on to the timeless piece. I just can't agree with comparing one films story to the cumulative work of 6 others.

The story in all these Star Wars films arent that great or original anyway - nothing but a soap opera about families in space. What makes Star Wars special are the characters and their interaction with each other.

My ranking:
ROTJ

ANH

ROTS

AOTC

Overall I would say it did a great job capturing the spirit of the OT, and it sets up Ep 8 great. Only 2 things I didn't like
[Show spoiler]Captain Phasma was totally pointless. I expected a lot more from her. And she let's the shield down no question.

Rey picks up a lightsaber for the first time in her life and beats Kylo, somebody trained by Luke and Snoke with Vaders bloodline.

Was a lot of things to like though:
[Show spoiler]BB 8 was great. Better then R2 ever was. That thumbs up with Finn was hilarious.

Han was great and acting like his old self. Totallybelieve able that that is what Han would be like in 30 years.

Finn and Rey did a good job setting themselves up as the new main characters, even if Finn was mostly a red hearing to keep you off Rey.

Besides the above, Kylo did some nice stuff: the blaster bolt, his talk with Han, and his mind control torture were all very good.
