I don't remember the details, but I believe the novelizaton implied Snoke had dueled Luke at some point, when the fledgling Jedi Order was under attack, and coming away from that with major scars.

I'll look it up later.

I was curious about the scars on Sebastian Shaw's Vader. I can't remember if they were ever explained?

Self-mutilation as atonement for the sins of his past.
Or he pissed off the Emperor a few times and got that lovely Force Lightning, which does wonders for one's skin.

presumably then Vader just have gotten into some pretty big fights in between ROTS and ANH, I guess.

Wasn't some of that explained in The Force Unleashed?

Eh, I just chalk 'em up to the burns he suffered.

I think plenty of people realize that but like the movie a lot anyway. Why is a new version of a great movie a bad thing?

because it lacks any real creativity, obviously.

But taking creative risks is a big no-no in Hollywood, they prefer to keep it safe, because they want to protect the $$$$ they invested in the movie.

And of course, Lucasfilm is no longer an independent company, therefore its new corporate owner will expect it to toe the corporate line, and not take any real creative risks.

I think I'll watch THE REVENANT or THE HATEFUL 8 so I could see something with substance. I'm bored to hell with STAR WARS and all the yacking about it

Yet here you are, in a Star Wars thread yacking about Star Wars.

As a sequel it was never likely to be that creative anyway. If you are looking for interesting new ideas why would you go to see the 7th movie in a series?

Wrong, there are many sequels and prequels that can be intrinsically creative even while continuing to explore the same universe or the same milieu as the original that everybody loves. George Lucas made some amazing sequels and for that matter so did Robert Zemeckis with BTTF.

If you believe that sequels can't be incredibly creative just because they are sequels, maybe you are the kind of ticket buyer that Hollywood wants - they always love it when people are quick to part with their hard-earned money to watch movies that take no creative risks or offer anything interesting whatsoever (and this of course is not limited to Disney movies).

I wouldn't call The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, or the Back to the Future sequels particularly creative. That doesn't make them bad movies by any means. I think The Empire Strikes Back is a much better movie than A New Hope... but I wouldn't call it more creative.

In the case of The Force Awakens I don't like it just because of the spectacle. I think it has better dialogue than A New Hope. Some of that came from the references to the original: it worked well as a parody. It was extremely predictable and lacked original ideas (like most sequels) but it had some great writing and acting.

My favorite part of the entire Star Wars saga is the dialogue in The Empire Strikes Back (especially between Han and Leia). The dialogue in The Force Awakens effectively emulated that better than any of the rest of the series. Han, Rey, and Finn all had quite a few great lines.

So, did anybody else notice or get bothered that they called the star that Starkiller Base sucks up "the Sun", just like we do here on Earth?
"Sun" is a proper noun that we named our Star... what are the chances that another galaxy's particular solar system also named their star "Sun".

Also, by sucking the star and containing it, the solar systems heat would dissipate and kill all life anyway within minutes or hours or days, so there really is no need to BLAST any planets if that was your plan. Sucking the star would suffice.

hehe, I loved the movie though, 9.4/10!
(here's hoping we see multiple colors of lightsabers! jot just blue and red, or even green... but orange, yellow, purple, or even pink!)

My top 2 theories are that Snoke is either Darth Plagueis, or the EMBODIED EVIL OF DARTH VADER, but not Anakin...

Hence, the title for "The Force Awakens", a lot of people think its in reference to Rey's abilities awakening, but that may be 1 half, the other half might be the evil force of Darth Vader that he gave up during his redemption.

How is this any different from some hipster sneering that he liked Star Wars better when it was The Hidden Fortress?

I think the only real difference here is that most of the people seeing The Force Awakens have also seen Star Wars where relatively few of the people who have seen Star Wars have seen The Hidden Fortress or the 1930s Flash Gordon serials or any of a number of the existing works from which Lucas borrowed many of his inventions.

Not only were there a lot of great lines, the chemistry between characters was excellent. Han bantering with Finn is about as good as torch passing gets. Finn and Poe were pretty good together and I loved Rey and Finn.

And let's not forget the bad guy. "Anything else?" was a great line and was perfectly delivered

not quite. "sun" is a generic term for a star. Our particular sun is actually named Sol, which is why we live in the SOLer System, and why in Star Wars they only refer to groups of planets around suns as "systems" never "solar systems."

you've got it a bit backwards.

I'm pretty sure the sun that the Starkiller base absorbed wasn't anywhere close to the Hosnian system. It was in Starkiller Base's relative close location, and the Hosnain system was lightyears away, as the weapon had the power to shoot half way across the galaxy.

Starkiller Base was a mobile planet, but probably not nearly enough to even get close to the Hosnian system. Probably only enough to get in range of absorbing stars in it's own general location.
