Dude, please. The last time I mentioned his name (along with a choice expletive ) I got a warning from the modfather.

Still, it's cruelly ironic that JJ was able to rein in Burtt's impulses to cover everything in AWESOME SOUND EFFECTS PEW! PCHANG! POW! but that the music underneath sounds like a tinpot orchestra playing it anyway. They need to get Michael Giacchino on Star Wars, stat.

Mockingjay Part II was the best in the series IMHO.

Force Awakens obliterated everything in its path. It also cleared out any film playing in IMAX and the higher grossing premium format screens for one thing.
I agree about Part II, I loved it BUT I do think that the chickens came home to roost when it came to the splitting of the final book (itself not the most popular instalment of the trilogy) into 2 movies so Lionsgate have only got themselves to blame. The fact that MJ Part 1 took almost 20% more money on opening weekend than part 2, even with major weather disruption for the former and Star Wars not yet impinging on the latter, kinda speaks for itself.

Yeah, the legs that Part 1 had would've probably carried over to Part 2 (it was the top US grosser of 2014, higher even than Guardians of the Galaxy, until American Sniper pipped it at the post) had TFA not gobbled up every screen in sight for a solid month or whatever it was but I think Lionsgate should lick their wounds and consider it a lesson learned.

I've been trying to get back to the theater to see this again. I might be doomed until April.

When castles got stormed nobles didn't stop building castles, they built bigger ones. When warships got sunk nations didn't stop building warships, they built bigger ones.
Good points, thanks.
If something like the Death Star is effective, why not build more of them? I can imagine if the First Order built 50 Death Stars and finally found a way to make the power ports almost invulnerable, they would have a lot more leverage over the Rebels.
The trick would be for the Rebels to stop the completion of construction as they did in Return of the Jedi.

Plus the Empire/Order could just aim at the planet and give their demands to the Rebels with that kind of leverage, instead of just blasting away. Surrender or else they could say. But the Rebels aren't easy to find and scattered all over the galaxy, so the Order would have to communicate their message loudly.
Now the Rebels just need a weapon called the Death Star Destroyer.

That would actually make for an awesome cliffhanger. They build yet another Death Star, the Rebellion manages to destroy it yet again... and then another dozen Death Stars pop out of hyperspace.

I wonder how much of Michael Arndt's script made it into the final movie.

First two Death Stars met their demise, now the Starkiller base. When will they give the Alan Parsons Project a chance?

I'm betting you haven't even *seen* them, certainly not Mockingjay Part 2.
I have seen all of them and I didn't hate them but they are terrible movies. The pacing if awful, the acting is terrible, the story makes no sense, the action scenes are inconsistent. Those are all quantifiable facts that make them terrible movies. Nothing wrong with enjoying a bad movie, I can admit that Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is a terrible, and very stupid movie, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy it. People mistake personal opinion and fact a lot but I am very aware of the meanings. The quality of the films is bad, the are flawed that makes them bad movies, BUT people can and often do ignore the flaws in a film and enjoy them, usually in the moment anyways, despite the flaws.

Or you could just accept that not everyone is going to salivate over whatshername.

************************************************** ******************

also I wasn't being entirely serious I was mostly poking fun at the misuse of the opinion verses fact debate.

I wonder how they'd handle that. There would be nothing they could do in that moment but retreat for another day.
It'll be interesting to see how they try to rule the galaxy without such a powerful weapon if they decide to put the Death Stars to rest. As suggested before, infiltrating the rebel's base to sabotage them would be another route.

I imagine it will be just like Empire, hopefully not exactly, but in that they flex their military muscle and just go around the galaxy engaging the rebels and meddling with everyone's business to maintain their power. The Empire ruled using fear and intimidation if they lose that then they have nothing going for them. They could use their clone facility to just revamp the clone program and unleash a new round of Clone Wars as was the fear the Rebels had in the now defunct EU. Or they could, you know, relaunch the battle droid program too and create new killing robots that are more terrifying than the probe droid in Empire.

I am not sure if the Empire could remain a threat without having a Sith sitting on the throne controlling the politicians and giant death machines to spread fear. I think the fear of the Death Star was what made the Rebellion desperate enough to get bold enough to go after the Emperor personally.

My initial enthusiasm for TFA has dampened a tad, but I still think it's a cracking movie. There's just a bit too many allusions to the past films for my liking, so that it becomes less a fresh telling of a story, and more an exercise in creating thematic - and otherwise - links to previous events, characters, and occurrences.

I don't have a problem with any of the characters; by and large I think they are excellently realised. It's the situations the characters find themselves in and how the events of the story play out that seem a bit tired to me. I know there's the old saying that history repeats itself and we're doomed to make the same mistakes as those who've come before us, but I was itching for something slightly less reliant on what we've seen before, re-packaged in a new "skin."

My only genuine fear is Treverrow as director for XI; I expect a Marquand / RotJ situation tbh.

Dude's already handled a major blockbuster, if anything Jurassic World would've been that situation.

I guess my opinion is kind of invalid since I haven't seen World, but the vitriol towards this dude seems unwarranted since he only has two films under his belt, one of which is pretty damn solid.

It's after watching JW that I arrived at my opinion of the fella. Before watching JW, I too was perplexed by the hate from some quarters. Issues with the story and characters aside, I lay most of the blame for JW at Treverrow's door. Some of those line readings at pivotal moments were abysmal; as director, what exactly was he meant to be directing if he let those readings slide? It's a good thing Terminator Genisys was released last year (an excusable pile of excrement IMO), because had it not, JW would be my pick for biggest let-down of the year (amongst the blockbusters).

They're both mediocre blockbuster-by-numbers kinda films IMO, full of cardboard cut-out characters and tons of fan service but I enjoyed Genisys more than I did JW. Not that I want Alan Taylor to direct IX, mind you.

I disagree with you on this one, Geoff (that sounds like the kind of exchange you'd hear on one of those football panel shows on Sky Sports).

Regarding JW and TG, I think the former is light years ahead of the latter, but that's not saying much. At least with JW it seemed like a solid attempt that was semi-botched in the execution. TG was... it still hurts to think about what I witnessed, so much so that I had to watch T1 and T2 on consecutive nights to restore my fond memories of the franchise.

I will say one thing about TG that's a positive: T3 has skyrocketed in my affections as a Terminator film thanks to TG. Plus, strangely enough, one thing TG has inadvertently managed to crystallise in my mind how the Terminator films are about - and should be - the Connor / Rees family. T1 was Sarah's tale, T2 was John's, and T3 should've been Kyle's story. That would've been sublime, and would've wrapped things up brilliantly.

Sorry, OT, I know.

Definitely.

There is a theater near me that serves great bacon cheeseburgers and beer on tap, they have reserved seating and big leather recliners. What more could you ask for?
