Yeah, it looks nothing like the other Star Destroyers I've seen before that have crash landed.

I know right. If only the Jurassic World trailers had done even half as good a job at evoking the classic Jurassic Park feel.

Try looking at meteor impacts and their craters, airplane impacts like the recent Germanwings. While something the size and build of a Star Destroyer would probably survive, it would not look "that good" after an impact.

Maybe it'll be explained as being made out of adamantium to set up a future X-men vs. Star Wars movie?

You're assuming it was in a free fall. All of these ships have hovering technology. A gentle crash landing is very possible a la ROTS. As another poster said, it might have been buried by sand shifts over the years. Suspend that disbelief!

It looked amazing, way more sweeping or epic than anything in either trilogy

I can suspend belief enough already for it not to bother me but don't the Star Destroyers have shields on them that would protect them entering the atmosphere and help with the landing? Also from that shot who knows that it even crashed. It could have landed and just be junk.

You have absolutely no clue how it crashed. Maybe they were still somewhat in control of the star destroyer when it was going down and they tried to make it as soft of a landing as possible. Also its a movie and sometimes you have to use your imagination.

Also it wouldn't look as cool if it was in a billion pieces, duh

That's because he IS old... and his character is supposed to be as well. It would be a problem if this was taking place shortly after the events of ROTJ, but it's supposed to be decades later in the movie, so it makes sense that he's old.

I do agree that Chewie looks off though, as you described. Still, I won't let that get in the way of my excitement for this movie.

Well that was fast-- excitements over, and now we're moving on to analyzing the practicality of how the star destroyer in the background got to that state.

Well it was fun while it lasted

Question:
[Show spoiler]The Luke voice over is trying to suggest that this is Luke, but this is actually Max Von Sydow's character, correct?
