Probably because there's a much bigger fan base for the film that JW. As far as loyal fanbases go, Star Wars wins hands down. It is a matter of the general movie goer though, the strength of the fans alone may not make it that far. But hey, if people kept going back again and again to see Jurassic World of all films, why not Star Wars?

I love the fact that the cast and crew of TFA seem genuinely optimistic about and enthusiastic for the film and it's prospects. This is in contrast to the prequel era, when the likes of Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor were clearly doing the promotional rounds through gritted teeth. Put it this way - the absolute last person you would expect to see whooping it up at Comic Con waving a plastic lightsaber around would be Harrison Ford. And even that old curmudgeon seems to have a sincere enthusiasm for the upcoming movie.

Good times to be a fan of 'the Wars'.

I don't think you realize how different the world is now, compared to 1999. In 1999, only the "nerds" went out on opening weekend. Now "nerds" are "mainstream" and we have social media to do a TON of marketing for them (Disney/LFL in this case).

In 1999 I worked in at a telecom and there were about 20 people in my group, 100 people in our section, and maybe 5 of that 100 wanted to see SW opening weekend. Now I work at a different telecom and out of the 20 people in my dept, 15 want to see it opening weekend.

I'm not just saying this because I'm a fan, I'm saying it because I'm a realist. This will break all the previous records.

Never had two films made over $400 domestic the same year till 2009, or a billion worldwide till 2010. Those kind of records are falling all the time now. Plus, in the adjusted list, Sound of Music and Doctor Zhivago both made over a billion domestic the same year, there is room for two mega-hits the same year.

Also, no film since Phantom Menace has sold as many tickets domestically, Avatar is only ahead adjusted due to 3D and IMAX charges (box office mojo does the adjustment due to average ticket price that year) which Force Awakens will have so it can make a run at Avatar which similar ticket sales to Phantom Menace.

All these overinflated expectations for Episode VII are gonna lead to comments that the movie "only" made $2B worldwide.

Man, you guys must be new to Star Wars. The scalpers do this crap all the time. Just look at the captain Phasma black series figure. 20 bucks normally. Sell for around 100 right now.

Things will come to earth again soon enough.

sorry, this thing EASILY will suprass JW... Stars is a world wide PHENOMENON... it may not do Avatar sales (that was harshly inflated by a time period where it was REALLY hard to NOT get a 3D only theater + it went back into theaters a year later for another run to add to the profit), but topping 1.6-1.8 Billion should not be that hard if it's good

This is nonsense. Pure nonsense. Only "nerds" went opening weekend? What the hell are you talking about?

You're delusional. This movie has something that EP. 1 never had: the original characters. This is unprecedented. IF the film is as good as it should be, I could see everyone and their mother going to see it, if only for nostalgia's sake. Hell, MY mother would probably go to see it, if only because of Harrison, Carrie and Mark.

Plus, EP 1 didn't benefit from lackluster reviews from both fans and real reviewers. Again, if this movie is genuinely good, you're going to get many, many repeat viewings. It's going to be insane...IF they didn't f*** it up.

Episode 1 sold more tickets than Avatar and had only a 20% drop in its second weekend, in addition to having small drops throughout its entire run. Hell, it didn't have a weekend to weekend drop higher than 36% until it had been out for 17 weeks.

But go ahead, keep living in your bubble trying to convince yourself that the movie wasn't an enormous success in all fronts. Everything that happened with Episode 1 is happening here with regards to pre-sale tickets, fan reactions, and expectations.

I can't wait until most of you are on here *****ing and moaning on the 18th about how bad the movie was. That'll be fun. History has a way of repeating itself.

But Phantom Menace proves that even if a new Star Wars film IS a bust then it'll do crazy business anyway. (I don't think anyone's saying that Ep I didn't smash it though, it did $1.5 billion WW adjusted for inflation, you're arguing with yourself on that one.)

Factor in the 3D and IMAX premiums (neither of which applied in 1999) plus inflation in general, and if Ep VII puts as many arses on seats as Ep I did then it'll do $2 billion (and beat JW) quite handily.

But it being an Avatar-beater is something I'm still not sure about because it's got to last the course to do so, it won't do it during its initial run. People are going to want to have to see it again and again and again over the spring months.

That's true, but he didn't actually serve overseas as he went mountain biking or something and received severe injuries.

The Phantom Menace wasn't a bust, far from it, creatively and financially. If that were true, then why did it sell millions of VHS tapes, DVD's, pull in $100 million worldwide in a 3D re-release, etc. etc.?
