Not to nitpick the phrasing but to be a bit more clear with the wordage in case some get the wrong idea, there is no certification or approval process per se by Dolby for the monitors. Dolby has a ‘recommended’ minimum specification for professional monitors for mastering HDR content, which is -

1,000 Nits peak brightness
.005 Nits black levels
200,000 : 1 contrast ratio
P3 minimum color gamut
SMPTE 2084 EOTF

Several monitors are offered in the market that meet these minimum specs and state in their marketing literature "qualifies as a Dolby Vision mastering monitor". This simply means that they meet Dolby’s recommended minimum spec. If one doesn’t have access to a Dolby Pulsar, 2nd generation HDR mastering monitors are looking good, ex.

Yes, but I can’t tell you anything related to DV licensing especially when one of the boxes is “Dolby Vision for Ultra-HD Blu-ray Specification Document” since

Everyone is on board with HDR, it is getting better and better every year.
But not everyone is on board with Dolby Vision.

The best is yet to come. When 4K front projectors get Dolby Vision that'll be the day.

In this future, HDR becomes irrelevant. Time people woke up to digital and the possibility of no more films at home.
That is a scary prospect

It is, and if you are a film fan and lover of HQ, you owe it to yourself to keep away from digital. All the talk of 4k and HDR and i think we have bigger issues coming with mobile and short form about to dominate the landscape. We can't bury our heads in the sand. Digital is the enemy.

Also notice that the next step seems to be taking away the Digital Copy from the UHD/BD releases

Exactly that. Anyway, you can carry on the discussion in the other thread if you want. I don’t want to hijack here any longer.

It's always good to learn, Penton is all for. It's all HDR related, even digital copies.

Speaking of HDR: https://www.techhive.com/article/328...fn-review.html

The only thing missing is 3D, and Dolby Vision.
But fear not if your main source of movies is Disney 4K Blu-rays, and that you're using Samsung TV's internal speakers, or a Samsung sound bar.

"Will you be on the lookout for the HDR10+ logo on your next video purchase? Will the free licensing incentive of HDR10+ ultimately be the demise of Dolby Vision or will they still peacefully coexist?"
_____

HDR10+ is being pushed, and many companies support it, it's free, they don't need to pay tariffs to Dolby or anyone else. Best is to support both, like the new Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players...for example.

* I revisited 'The Avengers' last night, in 3D (BR); it was ok, no HDR with this baby.

HDR10+ is not free. They just have a different license fee structure.

Before I asked you I tried to to research this and it was sort of going into a brick wall. I did read in general Dolby has two licensing plans one is a flat rate and another is by unit sales but absolutely nothing about DV Blu-ray licensing. On the other hand HDR10+ licensing looks dirt cheap.

Brands need only pay a relatively small, annual administration fee to sport the HDR10+ logo. Content creators, such as Amazon, Warner, and Fox don’t have to pay a cent.

Default no (Dolby Vision) - no (Avengers)

no (Dolby Vision) - no (Avengers)
  • perhaps, but as a direct consequence, i will not be purchasing 'any' of the UHD Avengers titles, as without Dolby Vision, they're not worth 'anything' to me
  • i will simply choose titles of interest to me that are in Dolby Vision (it's that important to me - picture quality that is - and, how it affects my appreciation of a title - significantly so)

I don't think it's fascinating as if it's inert: these are powerful people - I think the idea is extremely alarming and unwelcome.
