Penton-Man or any insider,
My nephew got the Harry Giftset from his ditsy grandma. He is a big Harry Potter fan. The thing is the Giftset was HD DVD, NOT the regular DVD. His family does not own a HD DVD player and of course, his grandma does not any better. I am sure this is not a unique situation as Christmas bring unfamiliar and uniformed shoppers to malls desperately looking and blindly buying presents for love ones. We have seen it played out with Planet Earth HD DVD and DVD in the past and with Oprah and her Favorite Things of 2007. I have a hunch many Christmas shoppers were confusing HD DVD with DVD. Is Warner aware of this situation with their titles? Interestingly enough, Planet Earth BD is slowly but surely gaining ground on the HD DVD version on Amazon. The BD version is raising at #18 while the HD DVD is inching downward at #14. This add credence to the confusion theory as new player owners are replacing uniformed Christmas shoppers/Oprah drones. Ive seen the same mess. My father in law bought 3 combo discs because he thought he could watch them on his hdtv and upconverter. Being combo he does not need to take them back and this helps the HDDVD numbers

To any insider. What should the attach rate be for the mass market? I know the FDA has the little food pyramid that says you should eat 5 servings of fruits, 6 of veggies, etc as part of a 2000 calorie per day diet. Does the MPAA have a similar movie pyramid that says people should buy 3 action movies, rent 4 comedies, etc as part of a 24 BD/DVD per year diet?
I ask because a similar issue was brought up on another forum. I didn't want to ask because I have already recieved an infraction there for questioning a HD DVD fan's weight when he said that he was unable to get down the ailse at wally world to get his HD DVD. Basiclly, I am wondering if whatever attach rate the HD DVD PG is touting is just flat out unrealistic and unsustainable. Regardless of which format wins, its not like one format or the other will inspire joe six pack to buy movies faster than they already are buying. |

As far as 51 GB discs, I wonder if Toshiba will finally answer the question at CES about whether those will work in current players. For any insiders, if Toshiba decides to define "work" as the first 2 layers work but the 3rd layer is unreliable in some player models and Toshiba then claims these will work in all player models with no explanation (to try to fool people), will the Blu-ray side make sure they don't get away with that? --Darin |

Those things aren’t even a remote variable in the determination of the outcome of the high-def war as there are no interested parties in any sector. Currently, people are looking at ways to end the war as soon as possible-- not extend it with empty promises or speculation concerning higher capacity discs. Now, it’s going to pretty much be nose to the grindstone for me folks all the way up and thru CES, so don’t read anything negative into my absence. |
