Thanks for that clarification. The way Penton worded it sounded like WB was going down the same path of Paramount in being bought out.

It sounds like that truly isn't the case (if there is more than a remote possibility of it happening)....yet

I hope really hope if the red camp tries to pull that bribe crap again that WB kicks them to the curb and makes it publicly known. What a laugh that would be!

Penton,

why do I get the feeling you're trying to prepare us for disappointment with all the talk about payoffs?

Hey, my first Chicken Little post! And the last one, I promise.

I think he is just trying to make sure we understand that the outcome we want is not yet a 100% guaranteed sure thing. Or else it is and he wants to leave it to WB to decide when to tell us.

i don't want to speak for penton, nor am i an insider.

penton is doing what we ask him to do. which is, give us updates on what is happening. he is simply been telling us over the past weeks, correct me if im wrong penton, that things look good, nothing is set in stone, and that MS/Tosh is trying to bribe WB like they did with Paramount.

We already know that WB has rejected HD DVD's bribes before, I don't know why it would be different now. No amount of money that they can afford is going to suitable enough for WB to lose out on royalty profits that they have worked so hard for.

MaxPower it seems like just wanted to clarify Penton's wording. I did not take Penton's wording on the initial read, the same as you guys did, but i do see where you are coming from.

Remember HD DVD is desperate, they are doing anything and everything to keep warner, they realize if they lose thme its over, so i'm not sure why we are all so alarmed when penton is simply confirming to us, what should be common sense for us anyways. Of course they are going to try to bribe them, they get this far in the game, they aren't just going to wave the white flag, they are at least going to go down with a fight.

I also just want to add, that when I read Penton's post, it seemed to me like the deal was more locked in place that the last time he talked. He seemed to make it sound like WB has MADE a decision and HD DVD is just trying to corrupt it.

Remember they have a new CEO who specifically mentioned embracing blu-ray.

Bribe accepted = death for both formats

Blu-ray exclusivity = Decade long Blu-ray cash cow like DVD

Paramounts short term bribe is peanuts compared to WB format making/breaking decision.

Agreed, plus the high level movers and shakers who invest clients cash, and correctly predicted Paramounts move, are saying WB to Blu-ray IS going to happen in 2008.

Thank you.
It is quite a tightrope act to provide useful info without jeopardizing some process and at the same time adding a pinch of comic relief.

Well I wouldn’t worry, if I were you. I think it would be best described for a consumer to have cautious optimism.

I’m still confident for a good expedited outcome but, I have been in this business too long to count my chickens before their hatched…..meaning until the Fat Lady actually sings.

I’ve seen some of the most unexpected things happen at the last moment on the turn of a dime. (The only thing that I am 100% certain about in the near future is that Chris C. will be joining Sony on Jan.1, 2008 and be reporting directly to someone at Sony Pictures…… and he is a helluva a negotiator for things like 4K Digital Cinema )

The most encouraging thing that has come out of the behind the scenes maneuvering is that a software company is finally showing its true colors (a *we could care less attitude about packaged media*) as they are unwilling to get deeply involved with *oshibo* corruption unless a certain studio grants them a multi-year live download package.

I doubts that’s gonna happen.

Hopefully everyone can read this, calm down, and have a good New Year's Celebration! Thanks for all the info you can give us Penton!

As a consumer I am not really worried. There is a lot of great content available already, and more is coming whether WB goes blu-exclusive or not. It's the "non-consumer" part of me that can't wait until the format war unpleasantness is over -- and here I think I also speak for paidgeek, kjack and possibly you as well -- so that this whole Blu-ray thing takes off & we can start making some money! Anyone else have a mortgage in L.A.?

Serious question: In your opinion, why has it taken sooo long for the Hollywood Studios to figure out the "true colors" of a certain "software company"? Its been obvious to most of us for a while now.

If I were in your business and was in a high level meeting where someone from a 'software company' was telling me "my business" and what I "should do", well, let's say I've been known to ask people in meetings..."Who are you again, and why are you relevent?" Why this hasn't happened with regard to this format war yet is beyond me...

Because, at some point, studios are, did, or will consider digital distribution as a means of providing content. In doing so, they don't want to upset the giant behemoth of MS.

It's studios hedging their bets on physical and digital content, and also the great power of monopsony that MS has. Not as much as, say, Wal-Mart, but it's still there.

Penton/Paidgeek/Insiders,

I'd like to give a compliment to our wonderful insiders on this forum. I've been following this format war since 05 (on that other forum) and have read many, many posts by Amir, RDJam, Lee, etc.

What an enornmous difference between our insiders and theirs. What comes to mind is that sometimes Paidgeek gives a short answer, maybe even saying he's not sure... etc. But look at all of Amir's answers.... usually 98% spin... always (and long winded). Such a difference.

What I appreciate about Penton, Paid, maxpower, Kjack, etc.... is how honest you all are.... never spinning... just letting us know what's going on.

That reason is enough for me to see the difference bewteen Blu-ray and HD-DVD .... besides all the other great reasons...

Anyway, I just wanted to thank all the insiders for such a classy act (and thanks to blu-ray.com mods for making this a wonderful forum to be part of).

I'm now officially blu with my PS3 (and a few Warner titles).

Sincerely,
Kurt
