It's as if the filmmaker and studio focused on the movie, characters and story than on pandering regressive sexist quotas.

I watched for the 2nd time but first one UHD. My initial viewing was on my Olen Epson 5030 on a 110 screen and the UHD looks spectacular. But I still don’t care for the movie. I thought it was ok but not something I’ll revist annually.

I'm far from being a leftist individual. It was a glaring omission in the movie that stuck out plainly when I viewed it in the theater. If you didn't notice it upon your first viewing then I'd question your judgement. The movie was all dudes, and it felt weird considering how many characters there were.

Pacific Rim was a great movie. Yet I still have the capacity to criticize it where applicable.

I'm sure it was just pure, random chance that there was only one woman in a movie where most parts had no overriding reason for the character to be one sex or another.

At least when I've gone back to my home state of Montana and see nothing but white people everywhere it's because Montana is basically nothing but white people.

Want to know what pandering looks like? This quote from Del Toro about why he picked the white male lead: "And he was the kind of guy that I can relate to, as a male audience member I go, 'I like that guy. I would like to have a few beers with that guy' … he has an earthy quality."

For me she was the only interesting character. It's not difficult for me to enjoy Pacific Rim every time I watch it, but it could have been a hell of a lot better with more a more interesting and diverse cast of characters.

First, there was not just one woman in the movie (and even if there happened to be only one character of a certain sex, there would be nothing wrong with it). And yes, the number of characters that belong to each sex was random. That's what happens when sex is not a factor in the story and the characters that get the focus.

How exactly is that pandering? Pandering to whom? Himself? He was the one who made the movie. That's how it should be. He creates what he wants to create and gets what he wants to get. He's not pandering to anyone.

Man, I finally got around to watching this disc because the sequel is coming out and it has one major problem:

[Show spoiler]It just looks too damn good! Seriously, it puts other great 5/5 releases to shame. Just 2 hours of non-stop HDR/Atmos goodness. I doubt this will ever be dethroned from the Top 5 releases on the format. In fact, if you were to create a Top 10 list this should probably occupy the first 5 slots.

This should always be the number one excuse for anyone who says that 2K upscales aren't worthy of the format. I feel bad for anyone who is a fan of 4K and doesn't like this movie.

All the eye-candy raves make this disc tempting, but I tried to watch the movie (in a lesser format, admittedly) and I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. Everything just felt like empty, hoary cliche upon empty, hoary cliche. I want to give it another shot because I generally like Del Toro and I'm a fan of some of the actors involved, but can anyone tell me if it picks up from the generic doldrums of the opening minutes? Are any of the characters ever interesting?

The Russian pilot Sasha Kaidonovsky might not have much screen time but shes still female. I would definitely say that it's better to have one or a few actual characters that happens to be female then to have a bunch and just objectify them through the entire movie like Transformers, Pirates or several other big franchises.

This disc gets overrated quite a bit on here from what I've read. It's a very good looking disc, but there are much better ones out there. It hits a very high peak brightness number, which I guess why it's lauded so much, but the overall HDR is lacking compared to other releases in terms of depth.

I agree on the one hand, because it's very bright without actually adding any great amount of highlight information (if a display clips rather than tone maps it could end up losing a LOT of highlight detail vs the standard BD) but do you know why I like it so much? For what it does to the black levels. The SDR disc has a ton of black crush, something that's always bugged me about it, sucking up shadow detail here there and everywhere, but the UHD frees it up considerably and makes the low end look so much better to my eyes. That combined with the high brightness is what gives it the feeling of having a significant boost to dynamic range, even if it's not in the part of the signal that we usually expect.

The praise is cliche, but for good reason, because what it does excel at is pretty great. If you want a VFX color and light show in a really cool looking movie, this is it. It's probably rated accurately, while some releases just don't get enough love is all.

I'm more partial to The Revenant, Planet Earth II and Blue Planter II, and then Sony releases like Close Encounters, Leon, A Few Good Men, Crouching Tiger, and WB's Blade Runner '82 etc... but I still try to make room for stuff like Pacific Rim, Guardians 2, Skull Island, Wonder Woman etc.

There's a lot of great UHD's now, and this is still one that almost anybody new to 4K HDR will be impressed by. You don't need any acquired taste or an optimal set up to get a readily apparent impact from it.

Has Pacific Rim dipped below $20 yet? I have never seen it, and was considering a blind buy. I thought that it might be on sale soon to promote the sequel.

It’s almost as if the filmmakers are trying to suggest women join the military in far fewer numbers than men do.

I was hopeful go for a sale too as I already have the blu. I’d love to get this but would like a better price. This would be one of the few blus I would upgrade to 4K
