I don't care. I go by my eyes and ears, and if it looks and sounds good to me, then it is all that I need.

Just goes to show that a distributor can release what is roundly welcomed as a reference quality disc, and which I personally think is the best home experience I've ever had, but you'll still have some people who think it "sucks".

I don't even...

Until we get large size 1:85 TV. I'm perfectly happey that they cut a bit from the side and fill the screen, why bother getting a 65" TV when you basically gets a 55" when watching movies.

Did they? or is it just open matte?

It should be open-matte, never mind that as previously stated it mirrors the 1080p disc and follows a practice that Warner adopted eons ago.

Wait, are you complaining about 1.78 vs 1.85?

That is like complaining that our UHDs are not '4K' but 3840.

---edit---

I'm all for OAR and the director's vision, but that complaint is being pedantic.

I got this yesterday. Absolutely outstanding!

I have never seen colours at home or at any cinema like we get on this disc during the Hong Kong battle. There are shots where we seem to get every primary and a bunch of shades in between along with bright whites and deep blacks in the same frame.

As for the aspect ratio, I'm 100% for the intended aspect ratio. This is what we should get all of the time regardless of how much of our screens are used/unused. The difference between 1.78 & 1.85 though is so small that I just can't complain. I'm pretty sure that this will be open-matte rather than cropped anyway. Also, Del Toro approved Cronos at 1.78:1 for Criterion so there's nothing to say that this isn't his preferred ratio for Pacific Rim.

Got the disc today and really don't get what the fuss is about. The 3D still beats the UHD disc. Will watch the entire movie at a later date but so far I don't see any improvement. Perhaps my oled already brings out the best of the standard blu-ray disc.

I have the same TV and for me the difference in HDR alone was huge, compare the HUD displays in front of them and the difference is night and day.

On my 65" I can't see the difference but on my projector I see distinct improvements in colours un being more punchy and less motion artifacts. And there is that "pesky" Atmos sound improvement

Could also be the settings you use for standard blu-ray. HDR mode disables and overrides some settings. For me the difference was small. One thing I noticed is how dim the picture can look in HDR mode. But that is a general observation with HDR.
For reference my settings are OLED 80, Contrast 95, Brightness 47 and Color 52. Anything else 0 or default.

I have the same "problem" with HDR. The pictures tend to be dimmer overall. It feels like instead of boosting the brightness, HDR is lowering the overall brightness. I know it's not that, but I perceive them that way.

Your problem is the the low luminance level of OLED is just not enough to show the whole HDR. The difference between the regular BD and the 4KBD on my KS9500 is night and day. much better dark details and brights that's so bright that you almost have to avert your eyes.

You must be too young to remember that many of us were watching 2.35:1 LaserDisc on 27" 4:3 TV
