The Hayden has six of them I think. They finally can have real black. During the demo video black was projected full screen and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. This is a first for any projection.

What's a Hayden? I did some checking on this projektor and literally cannot find a reference to the price anywhere, when these things hit the "if you have to ask the price then you can't afford it" territory is when I start to lose interest, I mean the madVR thingy alone is either ten grand or five grand for the "basic" one. It's great for you orthodontist pilot types but it's a little out of my price bracket.

Are there any compression errors in this one, or is it bang-on perfect?
I don't want to upgrade if it's anything less than perfect, otherwise what's the point? The BD is already absolutely fantastic. Are UHDs always the same worldwide (US/UK/DE), or are there differences? |

Well, since we live but once, at least that we know of. I ordered the UK one on Zavvi (2 for 30GBP).
I love Pacific Rim, and the BD looked perfect on my 55inch 1080p Kuro, but I can image what it does with HDR in 4k, so.... ![]() |

I don't get it. But your post made me think about what a highlight this disc is for the format.
![]() edit: While it's hard to say top 5... it's definitely a top 20 specifically for HDR impact. It may have been top 5 way back in 2017. |

It's bright AF but doesn't have any more highlight detail than the SDR version, it's just been boosted into 2000+ nits. This is enough to impress most but it's a very "empty calorie" approach to HDR, superficially satisfying but with no substance. If anything I appreciate the UHD for what it does to the lower end, as the 2D and 3D Blus have a massive amount of black crush while the UHD opens up the shadows considerably.

One thing is this isn't as bad as torch mode Meg at least on my telly. Having said that, the 3D release is much better than the 4K as far as immersive experience is concerned. |

From AVForums
Enjoying a modest but noticeable uptick in detail over the already reference 1080p Blu-ray, the 4K release boasts staggering crystal clarity for all the tech inner workings, whilst the grand scale of the robot Jaegers looks even more epic this time around, battle damage finely observed, and Kaiju creature nuances equally graced under the 4K microscope. HDR and WCG make the real difference, though, as tech panels become eye-searing in intensity, the palette popping with a vibrancy that often belies the lack of an added dimension, and richer tones vivid throughout. It makes all the difference to del Toro's style of bathing the battle sequences in rain and darkness too, as now black levels are much more refined, bringing shadow detail to the fore, and allowing the primaries - neon lights, and the glow of the alien energy, as well as the various weapons - to ignite the dark backdrop. It's still one of the best looking 2D upscales on the market. |

From Bill Hunt The Digital Bits
Warner’s Ultra HD Blu-ray release presents the film in 4K at the proper 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio, upscaled from the film’s original 2K Digital Intermediate. It’s worth noting that Pacific Rim was shot digitally using Red Epic Cameras. Given del Toro’s eye-candy color palette choices and the outstanding cinematography by Guillermo Navarro, the film is absolutely ideal for High Dynamic Range. It makes a huge difference. Frankly, the film didn’t look this good even in theaters. Shadows are incredibly deep and dark, yet retain texture. Bright highlights have real pop and sizzle. Virtually every frame bursts with vibrant, punchy color as well as more subtle, luminous hues. And the range of surface texturing is extraordinary – glossy metal, backlit and high-lit water, translucent and scratched helmet visors – all of it rendering lovely depth. Yet the image still retains an appropriately gritty and film-like appearance. This title really shows off the benefits of HDR in a big way. |
