It’s explained by the scientists. There’s a scene in the movie that shows what the origin dimension of the kaiju looks like and it’s not the same as earth! I’m not steeped in the lore of this movie but I found plenty of videos on it. It’s called the Anteverse:

Random late to the party question...was the film shot to be a little crunchy in the shadows?

Have seen it many times and just re-watched the UHD version tonight to eval it on a new OLED TV. It still looks crazy solid overall, just had some moments where the shadows were a bit darker that I was expecting

The blacks are crushed to all hell on the Bluray. For the UHD they lifted (lightened) the blacks considerably.
